Default Tuning guide

Evening. Been doing a little research about tuning my 98 JDM wrx classic Impreza and I can’t find a basic tuning guide anywhere. I’m I missing something in the search section?

I would like to get my car mapped but wanted to do a few upgrades before I go. It’s apparently Standard so I’m guessing around 280bhp. But I wanted to know what mods I should do to take it to around 330bhp.

could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Am I being thick? I can only see that he covers the next w age Impreza’s on there? Or have I missed something obvious.

There is a really good subaru tuning guide that was written a few years ago. I thought it was a sticky on here somewhere.

It's here:

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ing-guide.html

Check out the links at the bottom of page 4 as the original links on page 1 don't work any more.

Amazing!!! I found that thread and clicked the links but they didn’t work so I didn’t go any further. Thank you!!

ive basically just bought an import wrx 1999 and it’s very laggy so I’m trying to find out why. If it goes to a rolling road for diag I’d rather have a few bits in place where he could also map and I come out with a little extra power.

ive tried searching for “laggy/lag” but you can imagine the threads I’m finding. It’s all about how laggy is a 3576, etc.

Do you know if the car is standard? Any upgrades at all?

owner told me it was dead stock. It had a vent to atmosphere dump valve so I put the original on knowing about the unmetered air principal. I also found three boost leaks. None of this sorted the problem.
only thing it has is a H&S exhaust from the Downpipe back(He told me it was group n but looks more like group a.

VF28, standard turbo on v5 cars, shouldn't be laggy or have a high boost threshold.

Love the look of that exhaust.

I don't think the classic has a cat in the up-pipe that would restrict the turbo spool so chances are the turbo could be worn out or blades damaged. Worth taking to a specialist as you say for a diagnosis.

Agreed. I researched that the JDM model has a slightly larger turbo and is laggier than the U.K. but this is too much. Literally everyone has said something is wrong. Genuinely thought the dump valve and boost leaks would cure the problem.
it’s just flat until 3750rpm and then finally picks up. I’m putting a boost gauge in tonight to see what it’s running and Holding and I’ll check all vac hoses too.
no I didn’t think it had a cat either but I know the Harvey up pipe get a lot of good reviews so I would do that if needed.

woukd I be right in thinking a TD04/TD05 would be a direct fit?

you guys have been really helpful so far. Thank you

Oh I’ve also found out it’s a 1999 car. Which means I can map the standard ecu. So does this mean the turbo is different to the one mentioned above?

It should be a VF28. It's possible that a larger turbo has been installed such as a VF22. Can you see the code on the compressor housing?

TD04 and 05's will fit but will require a remap. TD04 good for up to about 280bhp, but various hybrids are available that can make approx 280-310 with great low down acceleration. TD05, has a higher boost threshold.
VF28's can now be reconditioned and there are some companies producing hybrids, which look interesting. I have one on my UK00 and the bearings are getting noisy so I might look into getting a hybrid - probably kill my gears though.

Where's your coilpack if its on the passenger side of the car it's v5/6 if its in the centre of the manifold its v3/4 in which case you need an ESL daughter board or an aftermarket ECU. If the vf28 has been over spooled/run high boost you could have lost some of the tips off the compressor wheel which need found or they'll end up in the engine. Have you done an ECU reset after fixing your leaks and removing the dump valve.

I haven’t looked for numbers yet but I obviously can. It’s still got the standard heat shield bolted to it.

that’s a good point. I know a very good turbo company who would definitely help me out if I asked for a hybrid.

my coil pack is on the right next to the dump valve.

no I haven’t done a reset. I didn’t even think of that. How would I do it?

With regards to turbos, I have always found Turbo Dynamics to be brilliant. Very helpful, knowledgeable and won't overcharge you. They even fully inspected my turbo for free before I then spent a fortune upgrading it!

Paragraph removed at the request of Craig Bellworthy.

I'd bet the turbo has seen some miles on your car and needs changing or rebuilding. I can't remember if the 99 cars have an ODB2 port? They probably won't. Otherwise it would have been worth checking to see if there are any recorded codes in the ECU.

I know lots of people who use Craig Belworthy who advertises lots on the various facebook Subaru groups. In most part he seems to do fine, but he really screwed one of my mates over with his turbo and ended up taking his billet turbo internals out, putting them into another turbo and selling that onto another customer as a brand new turbo. Needless to say I'd never use him. He then tried to charge my mate £220 to get HIS OWN turbo back. Madness.

Would be worth getting BTSSM app and a cheap cable then to log some data.

Yeah I could always call Turbo Dynamics for a quote.
We use Midland Turbo for the cars we work on here and they are always helpful when we want something done. They’ve been really good with my brothers ST turbo upgrade recently.

ive done a search and I think I’ve worked out to check and clear codes so I’ll try this weekend.

One of these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Audi-...UAAOSwPhdVOa-2

A USB OTG adaptor like this (to size the large USB cable down to your phone port:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Micro-USB...b7541c09e04ecc

Obviously you'll need to check what phone USB connector you need and get a USB OTG adaptor to suit.

Then the BTSSM app and you can start data logging.

Once in set the knock setting to 5 otherwise it will trigger all the time on non-genuine knock events.

Yes should work the very best I cheated with one car and fitted a double din android radio and ran the BTSSM on it via a usb connector in the rear of the radio.

Yep, I ran mine to a permanently installed tablet in the end so I could monitor everything. Very cheap and useful setup. Saved my engine a few times!

Well that's what ended up happening with this cause we ended up with Syvecs pro which wouldn't talk to the head unit via Bluetooth so had to get an android tablet.

That looks nice. Hadn't seen the Syvecs app before. Looks nice and in many ways I prefer the look to the Toucan which I wanted for mine.

Have one fitted in the type r very capable bit of kit too both work out a the same ballpark figure when buying. The only plus with the syvecs pro is a number of different screens.

Can the touch screen on the Syvecs pro turn on AL and LC etc and change maps easy enough through the interface or do you still need the Syvecs cal **** dial too?
