Hi there and welcome.
P1 - good choice, i hope to be in the same position towards the end of the year.
If i may
There are at least two P1's for sale in the For Sale section on 'ere.
I know one of them, Ian Grattons, it is mint and Ian is a fastidious, careful ownwer, i would like this car meself.
try
http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=105983
Also Ian Cook has one for sale, both well worth a look.
Big brake upgarde is essential.
Watch for the usual
bad shut lines (panel gaps) indicting damage, lack of service history - Full service history essential.
Happy hunting

Also watch out for loose lower lip spoiler & even the front bumpers tend to shake loose!!!
Go for an STi instead you should pick a UK ex demo up for not much more, its a much better car altogether!

Just my 2 pence worth...
I've got a P1 without the big brake upgrade and would like to say that the brakes are perfectly adiquate, what's all this nonsense about you NEEEEEEEEED big brakes.
I've got one of the late P1's and touch wood it runs fine, looks fine with no problems in the 7 months or ownership.
If I had to buy one now with experience I'd look for one without mods and hopefully no track day experience, sound paintwork (armourfend on front lip), no cracked lights, no scuffs on alloys. My interior rattles like a pig at times but I think that's a design feature and they all do it.
Hope this helps.

AFAIK the P1 uses same brakes as standard turbo (but dont hold me to that). With that much power one would expect a significant increase in stopping power.

All I'm saying is that when I slam on my anchors I stop, and I stop good.
I don't see how I need bigger brakes, the normal P1 brakes are fine. Sure it would be nice to have bigger brakes, but you don't NEEEEEEEEEEEEED them

Quicker you do it the faster you can start enjoying it. I have stopped using mine evryday as my new job I need a car and I have opted for a BMW 330d Sport. I do miss the P1 though but about twice a week I take mine out for a blast and most weekends. I'm concentrating on getting mine spotless again and I am also planning some upgrades. There is alot of P1 bashing at time son this site but don't let them put you off.
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!!

I'd have to take issue with Ed and Petoir.
The lips and bumpers do not fall off. Not unless you continually bash them on kerbs. I had half the mounting bolts ripped out off mine by a loose piece of metal on some matting, during last years foot and mouth problems. Despite that, the front was perfectly stable until I had it fixed.
I've heard complaints about a few common P1 problems (stone chips, early brake pad issues etc), but the build quality is no better or worse than any other Impreza. I'm sure the Evo is great car, but with worse economy and shorter service intervals as just a couple of the drawbacks, I'd personally stick with a P1.
Josh
PS I've had mine since 09/2000. I've had one or two problems, but unless finances dictate otherwise, I won't be parting with mine for some time to come.

luv mine. Had a Uk300 - same brakes -defo needed bigger brakes - much more power. Would never go back. Test drove an STi - much the same as the UK - stick with the P1 or test drive - the difference isnt hard to spot.

Had mine 3-weeks and the difference between a standard turbo is unbelievable.
Look for scrapes on the front spoiler / dodgy paintwork / kirbed wheels / original mats, spot covers, and most of all a full subaru main dealer service history.
Low milage would be nice, I got mine with 4000 miles.
Good luck (there is one in autotrader with 5500 miles)

Hi Mickle,
The issue with the brakes is purely down to personal experience -it depends how hard you drive the car. I never got the brake upgrade and had a few scary moments (it happens in London when people pull out as you are accelerating). I have since driven one with the AP 6 pot upgrade and couldn't believe the difference - it gave me so much more confidence in the car as it felt like a porsche when slamming on the anchors... just my 2 penneth

Take any scoob out with standard brakes, try 3 hard sequential stops from 100 to 30, decide if you need brakes upgrading.
I upgraded the brakes on my STI4 after loosing the brakes overtaking a convoy of caravans which entailed accelerate, brake, accelerate, brake, ..repeat a couple more times, accelerate, brake..errm i said brake! brake!

love mine to bits - it's a year old now and still puts a grin on my face every time I take it out. 18" wheels are good (removed the slight understeer it had with the std 17") and it cheerfully rattles along but I only notice when the girlfriend makes me turn the radio down
I haven't upgraded the brakes yet as they're fine 99% of the time. tends to be in the wet or when it's been pushed hard for a while that slight fade happens.
I'm ignoring the pricing chat on the other thread as I'm keeping mine - it will be lovingly garaged and used as a toy when I get the next car - except that aside from a 911 Turbo (pause while I dream about that) and the fabled 400 BHP 4wd F type that looks like it will never happen, there's nothing else I want.
Get one, you won't regret it.....

On the brakes issue I think it depends how and where you drive.
I felt the std brakes werent up to scratch on mine braking hard from 100+ (kmH ) on an A road which I use regularly a fast a road with some v steep gradients.
The std brakes felt as if they would stop you but only just. Upgrades gave much more confidence and brought stopping differences down.
Having the brakes done is a must as far as I'm concerned as it enables you to make so much more of the performance the P1 has to offer.
PS had std brakes on my old MY00 and never felt they werent up to the job. Guess its down to the P1s extra go.

Read all your messages thanks, decided to go for the P1 thats at Heritage (local dealer). 21000 miles, dump valve, s/s exhaust (minus one cat), 18" prodrives plus Prodrive upgraded seats, brakes. May 2000. Reg as said before - P1 IN UK.
Sounds good to me, what do you reckon!?

Sticking my neck out I reckon that although the spec is nice you would be better off with a slightly lower spec later lower mileage car.
Brakes, wheels and zaust are the only key mods youd really see any money back on that one.

When I bought mine they pretty well asked what mods I wanted and what price I would pay and we then did the deal. I was v impressed with the quality of the cars and the std of preparation on them as well.
Dont want to put you off a deal though it you're nearly there already.
