Cool

I've had my MY01 since tuesday, and have the feeling everybody wants to race me to the next trafic light. WRX are pretty rare here in Portugal, and everybody seems to see a bullseye on them. Since I'm breaking it in, I've been behaving pretty much, but the self control had been getting harder and harder.
How often do you take the bait from people you know you will easily beat ? Most people here have Fiat Punto's, and the likes...

Cheers

Hey you aren't the famous Rui Costa are ya?!

I nearly always take the bait off the lights, its an education thing where people dont realise how fast scoobs are on a short sprint. Had a guy in a VR6 Golf a while back. I thought he would keep up.... no where near!!

No, I'm just the unknow Rui Mad Max .

Yes, education is a good Idea, especially with VR6's and the like, but I'm talking GTi's and stuff... They all seem to want to be ridiculed, and I don't really feel the need to show them (Or anybody els as a matter of fact) anything...

The question here is not a run with (not against) a VR6. Until you try, you don't know if he can keep up somehow. It's a run with a Punto 1.4... Do you even bother ?

I'm asking because when I had my Alfa Romeo 1.7 16v, I used to "provoque" porches so that I could hear their engines roar, not because I had any dream of getting the 1st 10 cm :-))

Yup... Loved the beastie ... It was a constant fight to keep it on the road though When they say they have character, the're not lying. I just had to move on because it was getting old, but I did (and still do) miss it...

Max,
The same types of cars hassle me too here in Greece. I only blow the cars off that are not from my town. Because my town is small about 16000 population I take it easy with the cars from here. I don't want them thinking, "there's that smart 'arce' Ozy". "Whats he trying to prove". They know I have the quickest car here. No other Scoobies or Evo's in this town or anything of the likes, just the same cars you mentioned. We can tell from the number plates where a car is from. If they're from another town I don't hold back.

but id just want to see it go... the only way to see most cars go is to get them gee'd up

Yes TFyus, that's what I did when I had the Alfa, but now that I'm in the scooby "pikes peak rookie", It feels awkwerd showing people what I've got...

It's as if I was showing off, and I don't always feel confortable with it... Weird right ?

i do understand

aslong as they egg u on a bit u dont need to feel guilty.

I remember the days when i had 59bhp i used to try and race anything just for fun, not hounding ppl just asking them to blow my doors off... the time i took an escort cossie on was well amusing i got so blown away thru the roundabouts and late braking my car was excellent with massive 4 pots and proper suspension so i could havea great play with them their and then they would blow my doors off a bit on the straights and then slow down so i could pass them and then the chase would start again, it was purely out of the love and desire for such wicked cars be it subaru cossie evo or anything, the other crap car owners just love the other cars and can only dream of owning one and as such wanna see one go!!!

its all in good faith

ps... iam now the bait and i dont get beaten

Right... Seing myself as the bait does help to loosen up a bit... Thanks !

Still, Portuguese drivers are an awkward bunch, some feeling defenatly offended if somebody (anybody) is faster than them... SOmetimes it's ridiculous, but I can always back down (Or fly away) if I feel someone is taking it too seriously ...

Cheers mate... you helped a lot

I started with:

Citroen BX 1.4 (about 60 or 70 hp) Mom's
Cirtoen XM Turbodiesel (110 hp) Mom's
Alfa 33 1.7 Quadrifoglio. (118 hp, but 250kg less than the XM) My first car, a girlfriend trashed it against a tree
Alfa 33 1.7 16v (137 bhp).
Subaru Legacy Turbo 200bhp
Subaru Impreza WRX Sport Wagon 218 bhp...

Where will it stop ???????????

When do I take the bait? Mainly on motorway, when mr rep-in-bmw comes tear arsing up behind and wanting to park in the blackbeast's boot, I move over (eventually ) and then pull right back out and then move HIM out of the way, dangerous and foolhardy, but might point out to the ***** that some people don't like the way he drives.

Most of the time I don't rise to it (you chickin McFly?), aint worth it. Unless the guy really, really needs to be taught a lesson, ie; spotty wee gadge in nova who thinks that the blackbeast is just for show, just like his car, then he gets a real shock that I might have a sad boy's drainpipe exhaust but it is connected to a car that has the performance to match. hehehehehe

I can't help myself sometimes, but only when its worthwhile, I don't even bother with the Nova 'Boyz' brigade. Unless they don't want a race, but just want to hear it pull off (i.e. all looking at you with a silly grin.)

When I was young and had a little hot hatch, I used to try to get the big boys to pull away just to see / hear the thing: especially with sexy sounding cars, TVR, Porsche, Austin Martin, etc... It's like dreaming that you could have one some day.

Not this old chestnut again!

Bikes-v-Scoobs. Blimey. Seems to be causing a reasonable amount of banter now that the summer's here! Lets just get one thing straight. A big bike will anihilate any scooby, from a humble MY94 UK car to a full blown WRC, in a straight line on a dry day. Actually, in a straight line on a wet day, I'd still kill a Scoob! It's the wet corners that cause the problems

Still, we're talking nice dry day with dry roads, aren't we........

Any biker that cannot keep that advantage through the bends is either not trying hard enough, or not experienced enough to do so. Again, and average driver in a Scoob will/should whup an average bike rider.

Picture two roundabouts set about 400 metres apart. From a standstill at the first roundabout, a Scooby might gain a little advantage, but if it came out of the second one ahead of the bike, I would be surprised.

I can see this one being put to the test sooner or later, and have to say that I'm up for it! Throw in combinations of twisties, short straights, hairpins and longer straights, and we'll see what's what.

Ork,

Without quibbling about tenths of seconds, any decent-sized bike has a massive acceleration advantage, at least in a straight line.

Ok, so you can catch up through bends, but you can only really overtake on the straights, right? Which is where these guys have the acceleration/top speed advantage.

Hmm. The choices here are that you are Juan Pablo Montoya (in which case respect), or that these guys were crap riders (or had the sense to realise just how little their licences were worth should they come across the police). I'm guessing that it's the latter.

Bros

PS If these guys were doing 140mph, and you were pulling away from them, you must have an acceleration advantage, right? But your car realistically tops out at 145mph (the last few mph take forever to get there) and a GSX-R is still accelerating at 150mph. So if they were trying, how on earth could you be pulling away, since you'd already have hit max speed at this point?? Unless you don't drive a Scoob, that is.

I find that taking the bait is often too easy, and that a far more challenging action is to let Mr. Hot Htach or rep-man get right up your tail pipe, hare off down the road and look in the rear view mirror to see you not taking the bait. 9 times out of ten, they will then slow down to let you catch up at which point you can open it up and blow then to pieces.

many fast bike riders are nothing like as competent as their machines are, as such its unusual to come across a biker that can really push his machine.

in a straight line tho its rather scary what they can do to you if a hybussa then at any speed if other fast bikes then especially up to 120

Last week, as I was pulling into a petrol station, I just happened to look to my right and saw two bikers, one a Susuki GSXR 750 and the other a Kawasaki 750. The biker on the susuki was making some hand jestures as if to say I would have no chance of keeping up with him. So,I decided to drive straight through the petrol staiton and sit about one hundred yards behind them. At this time we were in a thirty zone, but about two miles ahead lay a 5 mile long twisty road and the national speed limit applied there. Sure enough as soon as we hit the national speed limit the bikers opened right up. So did I. The first mile of the road was straight, so the bikers
pulled away, just a bit, but as soon as we started to hit the twisty sections of the road, I caught up with them, passed them and
pulled away from them. Now I know they were trying because they must have been doing around 140 at this point. At the end of the five mile stretch of road was a rounabout. I went round it and started heading up the oposite side of the road, just as the bikers were reaching the roundabout.
I then made a hand justure back at them as if to say putt putt's.

So, the moral of the story, respect to biker, but not too much.

Bros,

why can YOU only overtake on straights?
You can overtake anywhere you want, unless you are following the highway code.
Forget tenths of a second. We are talking about from A to B here.
I am Juan Pablo Montoya's Father.
They possibly were crap riders, but then they shouldn't have noised me up at the petrol staition.
Anybody who buy's a fast bike, doesn't buy it to ride around doing the speed limit.
How do you know that my car tops at 145mph, did you read it in a book!!

Buy the way, my little sisters got your record! Can she have your autograph?

I am well awair of what bikes can do, and what they are capable of,I have been on a few, but you should be proud of the handelling on your scooby.

Given the odds, there were TWO bikers, now surely one of there ego's would not have let me pass them.

MattOz be suprized.

If it makes you's feel better, I was killed by a TVR on the motorway.

I was wondering where you managed to make your overtake, as you’d have had no chance in a straight line or coming out of corners, so I can only assume it was on the way into a bend. Please don’t tell me it was mid-corner ...

I don't own a Scoob - I like them and have driven several, but they're a bit too much hassle now (insurance, thirst, nickability). I understand the top speed to be around 150, possibly a bit less, but I'm sure you'll set me straight on that if it isn't.

The thing that confuses me is that you were pulling away from some 140mph bikes. That means you must have been travelling at your absolute maximum speed. Thing is, once you get to said speed, you stop accelerating, at which point a faster vehicle (say, a 165mph Suzuki GSX-R750) would be closing the gap between you, not being left behind.

Of course, it may be that you were doing 150mph on tight, twisty roads, which is why the bikes couldn't keep up? If so, why not call call Dave Richards as I imagine he has a job for you.

Bros

PS If you knew anything about bikes you’d understand the nickname.

To overtake not one but two vehicles, both of which are faster in every way than your car, and with riders who were anxious not to be passed, shows an almost superhuman level of skill, one which frankly I find hard to credit as anyone could hold you up in a corner, no matter how much faster your car is, just by positioning themselves awkwardly. And once you're in a position to overtake, the rider then opens up the throttle and out-accelerates you. No contest, and no level of skill needed from the rider.

So we're faced with several possibilities

1) The riders in question were muppets and even if they were trying their hardest, they were clearly a pair of dayglo numpties who couldn't out-ride a kid on a rocking horse

2) The speeds were significantly lower than you imagined them to be - perhaps I misunderstood and the 140 you mention is kmh rather than mph?

3) You cleverly overtook the bikes by cutting a couple of miles out of the route by going off road rather than using that silly ol' tarmac stuff. After all, might as well use the 4WD!

4) Your overtake was accomplished through a better pit strategy. Ron Dennis is on 01483 711311.

5) You don't drive a Scooby - you've got a Sikorsky S-76 and so don't need roads. OK, the interior fittings are even duller than the Scoob, but with kerosene at 15p per litre, you should care.

6) You're James Bond, licenced to er, drive. Your Impreza is fitted with machine guns for clearing pesky bikers out of the you roar through the night, collecting blondes (and speeding tickets) as you go

7)The road wasn't as twisty as you remember it. And is called the M1.

8) The riders in question were in fact German tourists on a BMW R45, who kept stopping to ask where they could find a part of the UK not closed as a result of foot and mouth.

9) You're not James Bond, you're Michael Knight. KITT simply engaged Extreme Turbo Nutter Overboost Rockets and you jumped over the astonished motorcyclists. And I always thought it was done with trick photography and ramps ... how wrong I was!

10) You made the whole thing up. Naah, surely not?

Cordially yours

Bros

PS Dave Richards is on 01295 273355. He's anxious to talk to you, but a bit worried that the cars won't be fast enough.

You are finding this hard to swallow arn't you.
The two bikers probably found it hard to swallow as well.
There is nothing superhuman about killing two pishy wee bikes.
So what you are saying is that you personaly like to hold up other road users on the corners ( because you know that they will pass you )and then acelerate away from them on the straights.
I once went to the gocarts and there was a stereotypical driver like that. I was faster than him, so on the corners he would try to block me off. Hence he ended up in the tyres and I won.
None of the two bikers, cars, busses, wee lassies held me up at any corner.
This is what you called am imaginary sinario or dream.

1).I am seriosly starting to suspect that it was YOU and MATTOZ that were the two shamefull rider's in question. Come to think of it there was a strange facial character benieth one of their visors. Sort of like a hogs nose.

2).The speeds were as quoted. I omited the mph for legal reasons.

3). Again, they pulled away from me on the straights, but as soon as we hit the corners,
well..... it was like eating pizza.

4).The only stratigy that is needed is a how to cut your losses and swallow. Poor bike riders!

5).I do drive a scooby. **** I never even mentioned it was only a 1.6 hatch with a space saver on it. The only thing that was dull was the headlight's of the two bikes deminishing into the distance.

6). The only way a biker would get buy me on a straight road, was if he went up the middle of the traffic at a set of red traffic lights. That how bikers claim they are faster.

7).James Bond is fictional. I am real. I passed these two bikers with such ease and skill that I could have lent out of my window and looked to see if my wheels were dirty.

8). How?

9).It would probably take one of these plonkers to ride your motorcycle correctly. You know, fixed to the stage with scenery in the background.

10). The only thing that was made up was the distance the bikers lost that day. Unfortunatelly by the time they had made up the distance I was on the other side of the carriage way changing a clutch.

Stop being so defensive, your days are numbered. Next time a scobby comes up behind you and there is a corner up ahead, do the right thing and let him pass. You will feel better for it!

And remember this story every time you look into the mirror.
I will, but it will be my rear veiw mirror, not the one in the house.
