Default I’m buying a 2007 white Hawkeye STI

https://www.grahamwalkerltd.co.uk/ve...b-4cde7192d5b2

New to the Subaru world but I’ve always wanted a Hawkeye. This particular one ticks all my boxes. What should I expect going forward?

I also plan on keeping the car how it is and if I was to change something, maybe a new exhaust setup to unleash that famous rumble?

Thanks...

Nice car.

Keep a few grand handy for the likely 2.5 engine rebuild

Welcome

Sorry to **** on your chips but what you should expect going forward is complete engine failure as it's a 2.5 unless it's been rebuilt and forged.

The 2.5 engine is about the worst you can get in standard form and you need to do your homework on it. Head gaskets fail and piston ringlands fail.
A rebuild will set you back between £4k and £5k by a reputable company.
any mods performance wise will need mapping in,you cant just chuck an induction kit on and leave it.

The car looks clean, how much was it? I see your in leucester-where abouts?

not all fail , a cat back with a centre silencer delete pipe will give you a burble , no mapping needed

Saying all fail is a bit of a sweeping statement. How many fail due to idiots? Plenty.

I agree though it is Subaru week point and the record of failures is not the best. Head gasket is a case of when not if, eventually. Worst being as far as I can see in the 2008 Hatchback motors. Good idea having a "Oh **** Fund" As already said and performance add ons require a map.

Expect regular servicing without delays, oil every <6000 miles most will do it 3000. Unless you do it yourself this will be approx £100 per change. How many miles will you be doing? I guess you know the road tax £535 per year. 2006 model is only £325 per year.

Just looked at advert Tech info and forget 34mpg for Urban unless it dropped of a long cliff. Expect mid 20s average low 20s if town driving. When you first get it expect very low MPG.

How many 2.5 motors have ringland failure and don't even know it , having said that I loved the 2.5 in my fsti it was still going strong when I replaced it with my 2.35 .
Closed deck 2.5 is the way forward so im lead to believe .

Car looks great.

Just to add my experience.. my 2007 car had head gasket failure at 23k miles, when stripped there was ring land damage to 2 pistons and tension had gone on cylinder 1 crank bearings. This was prior to my ownership so I cant confirm what power the car was running at the time but it was on standard turbo and intercooler.

Running costs are high as mentioned - high tax bracket, low mpg and an oil and filter change twice a year for me.

As above, if rebuilt and forged it's seems like a very nice example.

Well I certainly didn’t expect all the negativity around it The car cost 11k and in my opinion is the cleanest example. Deciding factor was how clean the engine bay looked and I’m praying it’s forged. Either way it has 12 service stamps in its history and owner seems to have really looked after it. I’m also buying it from a reputable Subaru garage who have said the head gasket has been done. I do 3000 miles a year and not bothered about mpg or tax

Don't let it stop u the car will put a smile on your face and the gamble is worth it. Just be prepared to dip in to your funds.

the deciding factor was how clean the engine looked? are you serious?
not trying to be negative just didnt want to sugar coat things for you, the 2.5 is truly a shocking engine in standard form with or without service history/clean engine bay. yes there are some that seem to be ok but many of them fail.
many people say that just doing the head-gasket is not enough and it certainly doesnt address the ring land failure. its always advised to do a full rebuild to cure the issues. i hope you dont have any issues with it but make sure you have some funds ready for a rebuild IF it ever needs one.

i wouldnt say they are expensive to maintain

cambelt kit £400 ish fitted every 4 years or 40k which ever comes 1st
oil and filter change £100 ish
gearbox oil change £80 ish
diff oil change £40 ish
spark plugs £100 ish fitted
discs and pads all round £500-£600 ish for some decent items.
make sure you use decent fuel and NOT supermarket fuel, shell v-power or momentum 99 etc

i change my diff oil in my hawk sti every year and gearbox oil every year, depending on miles covered i may change engine oil twice a year, very rare i see over 3k a year though.
subaru's are rugged cars and are generally built well, the 6 speed box you have and the rear diff are pretty much bomb-proof same as drive shafts and the brembo brakes are more than up to the job with decent pads and fluid/lines.
suspension can be a weak point and perfect excuse to upgrade when it starts knocking. decent set of tires will make a huge difference along with a proper fast road set up.
you shouldnt get any problems with electrics but if only used for short trips like mine then invest in a c-tek battery conditioner to keep the battery in tip-top order.

get the car under-sealed properly (scooby-clinic offer this for around £250)

and remember to always warm up properly before giving it a toe full (and i dont mean sitting there with it on tick over) just drive around for 10-15 mins letting everything warm up and then enjoy. to cool down just drive off boost for the last couple of miles and then switch her off, no need to sit there with it on tick-over 'cooling down' lol.

hope this helps mate

Also, be aware there seems to be a mileage discrepancy on that reg - might be innocent enough but I’d question it.

Looks very nice

I bought my old impreza type r from graham walker, they told me it had come to them with a knackerd engine so had it rebuilt and forged but had lost the paperwork and promised to forward it on when they found it, a little over 6 months later the head gasket was showing signs of leaking so took it to a specialist who on stripping the engine found the head gasket had gone and i also had a odd piston, 3 sti ones and one from a wrx if i remember rightly. This was over ten years ago.

Enjoy your new car

They’ve sold and worked on many Subaru’s and I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

You're obviously set on it so good luck with it. I hope it turns out to be a good one for you, it really looks the part in the pictures and its rare to see a white UK car so may be worth taking it on either way. Its last owner had it for a while going by the data on record.

Martin TypeR's story would concern me more than the mileage discrepancy which looks like a plausible typo. The MOT is also due in under a month so bear that in mind if you've not got a friendly tester too.

Good luck.
