Default Engine identification

Mate has this engine, trying to identify it.

I'm thinking early WRX or Legacy engine.
Has crosshatching on the front of the block. Awaiting to see what code is on the engine and what turbo it has...... any thoughts?

Well it's defo the early MY93-96 engine.

I believe it's the EJ20G, regardless of whether it may have the STi forged pistons. In any case, IIRC from API David, the cross-hatching must be around the oil filter housing, for it to be the STi engine... Although, I might well be talking utter tripe lol

So....we await merlin24's input...

the engine could be anything upto a v4 as it has the inline manifold bolts, the easiest way to id the heads is to look at the cam covers if they have ribs above and below the spark plug holes they are the legacey 2 bolt coil pack heads, if the cam covers have ribs above the spark plug holes then its a version impreza 1/2 heads, if the cam covers have no ribs it will be a version 3/4 heads, as for what spec the block it is or internals who knows lol.

I'll pass that info on.

He says it has EJ20BUB cast in the block.

If you do a search on it, it has listings against various models including RS and a '92 Legacy
