Exclamation

Does anyone have any idea about where to find information on the different engine codes for JDM Scoobies?

Specifically I want to find the spec of an EJ20BUG engine - I know that it is an EJ20G Closed deck engine but I want to know what the BU letters signify?

These letters are stamped on the top lip of the block on the right hand side where it mates to the gearbox.

The gearbox has a sticker showing the gearbox designation just a little further down.

I believe the engine is from a 95MY Type STi/RA - so if you have such a beast please have a look to see what numbers are stamped on your block!

Many thanks folks

I know that EJ20MUB is 2.0L SOHC atmo open deck, and EJ20BUB is 2.0L DOHC turbo closed deck. Will have a look tomorrow on my EJ20 DOHC atmo closed deck (JDM spec).

LHD Ver 1 - that gearbox is the original for the car which is a WRX MY93 (JDM) - only the engine has been changed for a MY95 - hence I want to know exactly which engine it is!

Well that tranny only came on two models the standard 240hp WRX 4-door GC8A48D and the standard 240hp WRX 4-door GC8B48D. The GC8A48D was manufactured from 11/92 - 9/93 so it was a 93MY and the GC8B48D was manufactured from 11/93 - 8/94 so it is a 94MY. The only other WRX model made during 11/92 - 9/93 was the RA and it had the TY752VB3BA and still had the same power rating as the standard WRX.

I don't know if this gives you the answer your looking for or not but let me know if you need more info and I'll look into it.

Thanks very much for your detailed reply - unfortunately it is the engine that I want to find out about not the gearbox.

You are correct the gearbox is from a 93MY WRX 4door that is the car I have (GC8A48D).

However the engine has been replaced by one bought from Japan which is described as a closed deck MY95 STi engine type EJ20G - I just want to confirm that is indeed what it is as I have made considerable modifications to the car and would feel a bit happier if I could confirm that the engine has the stronger internals associated with the STi engine.

many thanks for your research - is your source of information available on the web - I have searched for some time for information on engine codes but to no avail.

Ken

Does the motor still have a serial number on the timing cover on the left side? If it is indeed a 95 STi then it will be a closed deck with forged internals. The EJ20G closed deck was initially built to run 400hp in the Group-N WRC cars and are the most bulletproof motors Subaru ever built. If you don't have the serial number anymore it is rumored that all closed deck motors have a cross hatching desing on the block right above the crank position sensor. I have yet to see a closed deck that doesn't have that design.

No the serial number sticker is no longer there - however the hatched pattern is!

In theory that does make it the STi engine as only the Sti cars had the closed deck engine in 1995. It was changed in the non-STI cars that year.

It is just so difficult to identify these engines without actually opening them up.

Highlander,

I presaently have the MRT second edition WRX manual. In that they have the transmission that you have in the MY93 WRX. I can find no engine code to correspond to the one that you have posted for any model from 1993 to the present. According to the book the STi MY95 carries the engine EJ20GDW2HJ.

I did a search on Google and found another person who was trying to find info on that exact engine on the NASIOC forum without any luck. Try posting the question there as that one was in 2001.

The only thing that I can think of from the book is that the letter"B" refers to some type of Division of Regulation of exhaust gas. "D"= Japanese domestic regulation.

Hope this helps

Lizzard - the book doesn't specify where on the block to find the engine number does it?
