Hawkeye 2.5 compared to the 08 onwards?
Just trying to get some advice on the Hawkeye 2.5 lump. I’ve read all of the horror stories in the sticky thread for the 08 onwards engines but how good is the Hawkeye?
I ran my Bugeye WRX for 8 years from 69k upto 160k and the engine never missed a beat(it was only running 240bhp) it’s still taxed and Mot’d somewhere and I think it was on about 175k last time I checked.
Had a Blobeye WRX shared with my dad over last 3 years where we only put about 10k on it and it blew up at Oulton Park it was on 98k when it blew and was probably running about 250bhp. Had a 2015 S3 at the time so we let the Blobeye go for spares/repairs.
S3 is no more, thanks to the beast from the east, and so I’m thinking of getting into an sti as you can’t really call yourself a Scooby lover if you’ve never actually had an Sti.
There is a Spec D with 57k miles for just under £10k but I’m wary of the number 2.5!!!
Then there is Wilki’s Litchfield T20 Blobeye at £10k but higher miles...
So what can you tell me about Hawkeyes?
Thanks in advance for the replies.

I think the general rule is' if it's not been forged when you buy it be prepared to have to do it, some people on here are still running the original engine, but there's a lot more that's not. I would buy one that's already been forged. I will save you a lot of money and there is a lot out there to choose from

Subaru Of America (SoA) have rolled over and taken the hit on the 2.5 after numerous Class Actions.

I've just bought an 04 Forester STi so fingers crossed mine will hang on!! Though obviously I knew of the issues before I bought it so have a slush fund just in case [not that I want to have to spend it on such a repair].
What kind of costs are you are guys seeing for a forged build?
Also, do you think you'd see some of that money back when you come to sell, as the car could be worth a bit more than a non-forged example?

Budget on anything from £3k to 5k depending on what you want. Or more if you fancy something serious.
But in the long run there is no such thing as a bulletproof engine. However the sale cost may be a little higher than a non-forged build.

I don't think the forester has the same problems with the engine as it's a import, the jdm engine is different to the Impreza engine. I didn't say it was a 100% that your engine will go pop. It just there's a huge number that have.
There's a few manufacturers that have produced some quite expensive protential problem engines in the last few years.
