Default Cooling system fans

Hi all ,

i was performing a coolant change on my classic v3 sti. Part of the procedure was to allow the coolant temp to reach operating levels and allow the fans to kick in before switching engine off. My temp sensor reached mid point, idled for a further 15 mins but the fans never kicked in. I left the car for 20 mins on idle but the fans never came on.
Both top and bottom radiator hoses reached operating temps.
I am running an esl board and map on my car also.

Would you expect the fans to kick on upoon idling for 20 mins? does this sound normal?

Gauge sat at half way , then slowly rose to hear 3/4 then self levelled again. Car has always done this in my short time of ownership but never heard/seen fans kick in.

Is there any any way to test the fans?

Can you not control them in the ESL ecu , newage`s can be altered to come in earlier in the map.

You can plug the green and black test/diagnostic plugs which should activate the fans.
Check the fan plugs are all the way home.
If you have an ESL cable you can see the temp readings, iirc they should kick in @98*

Nah,it might reset the ecu if you follow the rest of the procedure but no worries you won't lose awt, tables Will need to re-learn at worst but afaik it won't even reset those if you just plug them in.

Fan covering air conditioning condenser should come on. Engine cooling fan will only run by signal from thermostatic switch on the engine. So only one fan of the two will run.
