Default Camshaft Locking Tool

Does anyone know if the Sealey VSE5055 Camshaft Locking Tool is compatible with older Impreza engines? They only state compatible with cars from 2000 onward, and list EJ205, EJ207, EJ255 and EJ257. Are the cam pulleys different for the later engines which would make this tool incompatible with earlier ones?

ImportCarParts list a tool which looks very similar and seem to imply it works with a much wider range of engines. I'm just wondering if there is actual any difference, apart from the price!

those tools are only suitable for MY99 onwards as the older engines used std hex head bolts rather than the newer allen type bolts that tool is suitable for

A cam lock tool takes all the fun out of changing the belt

Thanks - that's exactly the answer I was looking for. I've just realised they make another one that looks like it has hex bolts. Although the years still don't match, does this one look more suitable?

LOL - It'll be the first time I've done one, so I just wanted to try and make it as easy as possible!

On another note, is it generally considered good practice to change the tensioner at the same time too, or is that only more vital on more modern engines, as they tend to have a much longer timing belt interval? I did have all the pulleys and the tensioner changed 3 years ago, when it was last done...

I've always locked my cams with rubberized clamps, if that helps

Similar to these:

That's a good idea. I might already have some of those in the shed, too!
