just wondering at what power do people reckon its better to have a uk 6 speed gearbox than the shorter ratio jdm version?

on a classic if I went big power just wondering at what point would it be more beneficial to look at a uk instead for performance terms

prob longer ratio, short ratio you'll be changing gear more than in gear. if the car has plenty of bollox longer gearing wont bother it.

I've got a Classic STi Wagon with UK STi Hawkeye 6 speed, used it with standard power and now at 442hp/390ftlb, for me the ratios seem perfect I'm getting through the gears quick enough not sure a JDM box would suit my daily driving :/

Basically I'm really considering a forged build for my classic and would want to run 450bhp max so would a uk conversion or jdm suit my needs more, it would be a fast road/ track car

I run a jdm 6 speed in my v3sti,I can't say what power I'm running as I've never had it on the rollers,it's got all the mods for 400+(apart from maybe the bottom end)
I personally love the short ratios,it feels like my old typeRA only much quicker,I think when say I'm cruising in 4th gear with the jdm I can stick my foot down and be upto full boost very fast, maybe with the UK box I would need to drop a gear? Can't say for sure as I've never used a UK 6 speed.

Is there much difference in the bug and blob jdm for ratio?
I'm pretty sure mine is a v7 jdm box but it's lost the long sticker, only a short sticker on there and that tells me nothing. I do know it's got very very short ratio 1-5th and 6th cruises well so would imaging it's a longer 6th?

The uk and Jdm 6 speed are same up to 4th, it's only 5th-6th that are longer on a uk box, so for track I suppose the Jdm box would suit better as going into 5th and 6th you'll be still in good power band.
The uk box is better for the usual motorway cruising to and from events etc but if big turbo then you may discover a drop in boost going into 5th from 4th on a uk box.
The uk hawk box is longer from 2nd-6th so would suit drag or big power twinscroll etc

I'm surprised to hear that the UK and jdm 6 speed box is the same 1st-4th.
I would say the 6 speed in mine is very close to what my 5 speed was on my old v3ra!
I will have to do some tests as I did in the RA which was testing speed per gear.

I have the uk box and is also quite close ratio up to 4th, you can slightly tell when I put it into 5th driving steadily

Don't forget you have twinscroll so all gears will feel closer than normal.
Plus the Jdm 5 speeds were also shorter than the uk 5 speeds

From what I can remember at 70mph my rpm is about 2700/2800 and a Jdm is about 3200/3300 I think.

Ok cheers corky,I'll do some tests,I've got some figures wrote down somewhere of my old RA for rpm to speed in each gear so will be interested to know how close my 6 speed is.
Pretty gutted I don't have the long sticker on there so I will never know for sure

Didn't you say you had some of it still on? Could possibly make out if some numbers are still present

Yes it's got a small sticker on there,it's about 6 digits, the long one is totally missing.
I'll see if I've got the pic,if not I'll take one tomorrow,I think i put a thread up a while back and didn't get an answer so assumed the short sticker wouldn't identify the box.
