First thing would be a full service unless you have paperwork for the cambelt being changed I would get that done with new idlers and adjuster. If you are thinking of a uprated oil pump it is worth doing at the same time, possibly do the water pump aswell as that is run off the cambelt aswell. Then a rolling road run to see what power you have to start with. It will also show any issues that need fixing prior to starting increasing power. Through any local clubs find a reputable tuner to get advise from on the best way to get what you want, also ask on here.

subarus put there power down a lot better than a front or rear wheel driven car so you don't always have to go mad on power to have a quick capable car , air filter cat back system maybe a sports cat and a sensible remap will give you a very competent car , it will be quicker than the vxr by some distance , and a lot better in the wet , i'm saying that as a fellow vxr owner

The Vauxhalls do handle well and are such a nice car to drive is you want a comfortable ride, but can't be doing with fwd. You must go though tyres on that thing, everytime i see a VXR its wheel spinning lol

The UK spec Subaru's (215bhp) will cost more to get to 300bhp than a JDM version (280 bhp). But a better turbo, filters, exhaust, injectors and a proper remap will get you knocking on the door soon.

The JDM car is better equipped as standard and will only need a remap to get it to were you want. No doubt those with vastly superior brains will be along soon to tell you different, in short Subaru detuned/down specced the UK cars to keep them cheap for us Britishers.
