Tyres do vary in width from one make to another hence the op's question. I've just had a set of kuhmo rally tyres and they do come up quite wide compared to other makes.

Cheers guys as spud says some tyres do come up wider than others also a squarer side wall will create a wider contact patch.

I read a review in Max Power about 15 years ago testing tyres in this way, It was showing how to get 17's on a Saxo lol
There was about 15 tyres from different manufacturers, the difference in size was suprising. Some were 'narrow' with 185 tread, square corners and straight sidewalls. Others were 'wide' with 190 tread, round corners and bowed sidewalls.
The 'narrow' 185 trye fitted easily, but the 'wide' 185 tyre wouldn't fit
