Question Changing standard WRX TMIC to STI TMIC - Issues?

Hi,

I've just bought myself a new STI TMIC for my WRX.

Question is - Can i just do a direct switch or does anything else have to done? I.e. remapping ect?

If anyone can shed some light on this that'd be cool

Thanks
M

have you got an STI undertray too? You'll need one of those as the WRX item won't fit with an STI intercooler. Is this a newage car I assume?

What other mods have you got? Depends on the reason your fitting an STI intercooler as to whether itll need a remap or not. If your car already has the basic stage 1 mods - exhaust, air filter etc and you're just swapping the WRX top mount for an STI one in order to futureproof for more mods. Then I wouldn't say you need a remap....but it would probably be beneficial.

I've got a K&N induction kit. Raptor Afterburner exhaust.
I'm getting a stage 2 map on Saturday so i was wondering if i could fit it before i went (i.e. can i still drive it until then).

But looks like i'm not doing it if i need an undertray too - unless i can find one for sale ASAP ha!

It would be better to get it all mapped properly together.... but I don't think it would be the end of the world if you fitted it after your map. The difference in core size isn't astronomical...but a mapper would be able to take advantage of the slightly reduced inlet temps and air flow etc if you had it on for the map. Undertrays tend to pop up in the breakers section all the time, but they get snapped up real quick! Try pm'ing MattyB and see if he has any.

He's going to send the one he has for me, tomorrow. £25 inc. courier costs sound reasonable?

Is the TMIC off of a Bug? If not you'll have to mod the undertray to suit. Also are you still on a TD04?

Yeah it's off a Bug - thankfully!

I'm almost certain it's still a TD04 yeah.

I fitted an sti intercooler to my bugeye wrx without any issues. I removed undertray and premap pulled 260ish bhp on powerstation rollers. 12months later with racedynamix map on same rollers 284bhp again no undertray. 12months later with vf28 turbo, pink injectors and map tweak 336bhp again no undertray and wrx scoop. No gain or loss at these figures with or without sti tmic or undertray.

A STI TMIC adds neglieble difference to power and won't need a remap. If you can going for big BIG power, I believe the FMIC is needed. I have put at STI top mount on my hawkeye, problems are as follows:

1) You need a STI undertray and these are VERY VERY hard to find, compared to sourcing the intercoller itself

2) The right hand (as you look at the engine) IC bracket has two anchor points next to each other, one of these did not reach. I had to anchor it on one screw point and cut a wedge out of the bracket to clear the power steering hose.

3) The Y-pipe hose connection (red silicone part) almost didn't reach, in fact there is about a 5mm gap.

4) I was recommended a replacement dump valve gasket.

5) Don't get the wrong screws in the wrong holes, threading is soooo easy as they are the same size but different lengths
