Default RCM Rear Shock Re-Grease

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone had had their knocking rear shocks re-greased by RCM and if so how long it lasted before it came back.

Cheers.

Just grease them yourself, split and pack with marine grade grease. No need to bother with grease nipple. Done mine 2.5yrs ago and never a knock or bang to be heard

The reason I'm asking is that they say they've never had the knocking come back on any car they've re-greased and wondered if it was true or not.

But what actually causes it other than lack of lubrication/grease?

Caused by couple of bush's inside the shock not getting proper lubrication, wearing and allowing movement. Once they start nocking damage is done, so other than hide the noise it doesnt fix the problem.

One man's riches are another man's poors ... a rather subjective and unhelpful answer. Thanks.

In my opinion I wouldn't bother with it and find another solution. PM me if you want further details as to why I think that and why I think it's a lot.

I thought the point of a forum is to share information.Don't worry about the silly replies/comments some of us appreciate this kind of knowledge.

I am also interested in costs on this as I have the same issue on my 2004 STI and Subaru have quoted the following for just shocks.

Front shock absorber RH £460.70
Front shock absorber LH £434.63
Rear Shock absorber RH £448.19
Rear shock absorber LH £439.39
Labour cost to fit front and rear £410.40

OUCH And that's without VAT

Also I am thinking Would WRX suspension be a cheaper option more standard but would they fit the STI

I'm going to get a set of V5/V6 STi inverted struts fitted to mine soon. They're currently sat in boxes in my kitchen. I'm wondering whether I need to whip the rears apart and pack the problem areas while I can rather than possibly having a problem in a few years time.

They looked fine when I fitted new bump stops but this thread now has me wondering.........

I like the idea of the Pedders, Tidgy, but I don't really want to lower my ride height and the product description states "Lower your WRX by approximately 30mm".

Are RCM the only people to do this? Im sure that, with the wealth of knowledge on here, the problem could be sorted at a more competitive cost?

30mm isn't a huge drop mate.

https://www.scoobynet.com/suspension...ar-struts.html

Perhaps not much help for those who aren't confident enough to tackle this or don't have the time etc., but it's something I came across a while ago ... maybe more food for thought.

So that would be about 2.5k in total for four new shocks.

Fortunately, for you, it's a newage issue.

It was about £185 for both rears which is not too much I'll admit but:

1. Then you get to their geometry prices (which will need to be done as the suspension has been removed) and they are astronomical.

£60 excluding VAT just to check it and then a further £60 per hour (excluding VAT) to change it. Basically my geometry cost £180 to do and it wasn't that far out at the start. Plus it wasn't right when they finished and had to be done again.

2. I was advised by them that it would solve the problem and it didn't work - didn't even get 3 months out of them (2k miles) - they say this is the only car they've re-greased that it's ever happened to. Which I don't believe.

So I will not be using them again for the above and for other reasons. Other people may have had good experiences with them but I didn't.

Hey Mistermexican,

I wondered when you was going to post this. They must have a habit of saying its the first time it has happened as they said its the first time they had blown and engine up when they blew mine up. Have you managed to get any were with them.
