Hi all

I just installed some prodrive lowering springs and the rears are knocking, they were already doing it and lowering just made it more noticeable I think. I know I can grease them up, but I want to just replace them.

Searching online for a bit I cannot get a definite answer as to what part numbers I need.

But I have read on a thread that these are actually the none inverted type which are not right for my car.

Does someone know the KYB part numbers for the inverted types that will fit my hawkeye wrx?

Also with it being inverted, the bump stops are inside the strut, do the new KYBs come with bump stops already inside them? If not, how do I put them in?

OK, after doing some more digging. I think those 2 shocks I posted earlier are normal none inverted one. BUT they apparently will fit directly onto a 05+ wrx which usually has inverted struts.

But I think I will need some none inverted bump stops for them. Will contact a breaker on here for them.

This should work out better as I hate the inverted design and this way I can get rid of them

I swapped the crappy inverted shocks for normal ones and car is so much nicer. Contact Camskill, they will sort you out with the correct ones.
I could give you part numbers for mine but as mine is a wagon I think they are different?

Don't bother taking shocks apart and re-greasing them. I did and they knocked again about 2-3 weeks later. waste of time. Once the internal bush has worn the damage is already done.

Might be worth replacing the shock top mounts while in there.

What did you do regarding bump stops, do Subaru dealers stock the non inverted stops or did you have to go second hand?

PS, bump stops for non inverted struts are available from KYB and also Febest Auto Parts do them, these are what I ended up with as KYB parts stocks can be a little bit random to say the least...

I must confess I currently do not have any bump stops on the rear... (yes I know, Was in a rush and never got back round to sourcing them)
I have however done some research and I think the part number needed is 20371-AA041

As luck would have it I have just found this place http://www.spring-loaded.co.uk/prodd...rs~-~AK-735144

Just placed an order so this thread has spurred me onto getting it done. Will let you know if these look correct when they arrive.

According to the info modrich posted, unless I'm mis-understanding it, the bump stop/dust boot kit should be kyb 910046?

The bump stop is the same as the one you listed, but the dust boot is different.

If you're running lowered springs cut off the smallest section (bread knife), which will reduce the rear bump stop length from 90mm to 75mm.

Another one of these situations where there are many part numbers flying around I think

on the set I have ordered there is this entry 'OEM Reference (If available) = 20371AA041 20372AA031'
When I searched 20371AA041 I found many sites listing them as 'SUBARU IMPREZA G11 2000-2007'

Just received a call from spring loaded. Item I ordered is not in stock lol..
I gave the chap on the phone the part numbers of the shocks I fitted and he confirmed both the kits we have posted about should fit. however I now have the KYB kit on order from them.

So to conclude KYB 910046 kit contains the same bump stops as the AK-735144 (which is not in stock anyway).

but KYB 910046 has the correct dust covers?

Will the dust boots from the inverted struts not work the non inverted kybs?

I am using the inverted shock dust covers on my non-inverted shocks at present without issue. Be interesting to see what turns up and how they differ.

The dust boots are the same, but it's cheaper to buy the kit. So, you might as well get the kit with the correct dust boots.

I decided to change the rear top mounts while doing it. both the top mounts and the bump stops/dust covers have also turned up.
Now I remember what it all looks like and how it goes together. Dust covers go into the top mount and rotate to hold in place.

Found time to fit one side this evening. You could reuse the old boots if you wanted but as I have new ones I fitted them to the top mount.
It probably is a good idea to get new top mounts as my original ones the rubber was rather compressed and starting to split where the end of the spring sits.

Will see about getting the other side done tomorrow night.

Nice one! I won't bother with the top mounts as mine as still in excellent condition, will use new dust covers though!

Good job Fuzzbom. Yep, when changing from inverted to standard KYB Excel-Gs I noticed how bad the bottom nuts were on the originals and was glad I didn't have to get those undone! Should have a plastic cover over them or summat...

I was able to get the bottom off the inverted shocks by cleaning with wire brush, good squirt of WD40 and impact gun. had to push all my weight down on it (force damper rod inside) to make sure it bit ok. came off easier than I had expected.
but alas the bump stop was too small internal diameter to fit on new shocks. hence why I left it at the time.

Still, at least I am sorting it now

Speaking of bump stops too small.. (can worms about to open I feel) As I have the Prodrive lowered springs should I have cut the new bump stops down a little? Just thinking the travel could now be reduced and bump stops might bottom out?!

I have had a google and search on here but cannot find any definite answers.

I installed prodrive springs over the weekend. When speaking to peter he said the rear stops must remain long (standard length). They only drop rears by 10mm anyway.

as supersai said, rears don't need to be trimmed but the fronts should be the same length as the ones supplied with the PCA Dynamics springs if using non-inverted dampers

The pca wrx front stops, for inverted dampers (12mm shaft) are 50mm long - 40mm + 10mm very soft nose.

The only stop I've found that behaves the same, on a twin-tube damper (22m shaft), and fits the existing dust boot, is this:

Left - Standard 60mm front, twin-tube, bump stop
Right - Optimal F8-7662 - Use it dome side up.



I wouldn't be concerned about shortening the rear stops, as they're multi-sectioned, so very progressive in operation.
If, you were lowering 15-20mm at the rear, then I'd remove the smallest section. Making the 90mm stop, 75mm.

2pot, this has been bugging me, I have the PCA dynamics springs fitted with Excel-Gs on my blob wagon, standard dust covers front and rear with standard rear bump stops.

I also have new 60mm front bump stops fitted to Peters spec, do I need to cut these down? If so, what length do I need to remove? Do I also need to trim the front dust covers?

if the fronts are to PCA spec then you shouldn't need to cut them as the PCA bump stop length were designed to be used with the PCA springs.
