Question

Considering the number of events the SIDC participates in, or organises and the level of marshalling witnessed at one particular circuit...

Is it time we organised our own volunteer marshalls?

Even if just to bolster the number of circuit marshalls, or do paddock marshalling and thus free the trained/experienced ones to be where they should be.

Which does not mean sat in a van watching Pentti Arikkalalaklaka do his Guy Fawkes impression!

(Flamesuit donned, ready for incoming... )

There has never been a problem at any SIDC event with the level of marshalling, nor will there be.
As most of our events are held at major circuits with sufficient marshalling this isn't really an issue. Maybe in the future though?
We had nothing to do with the organisation of the Rally Day at Castle Combe, and if we were ever to hire the track for ourselves there would never be that level of marshalling in place, simple .

Oh, I agree Stef. (I wasn't making a "snide" comment at yourself or other SIDC bods).

Just saying that should there ever be a need I'm sure we could find volunteers to help.

Especially if we have airfield days or sprints off our own back.

Forewarned is forearmed, especially if training is required, etc.

What a good idea. I do agree that SIDC events are extremely well run but some of us used to marshall rallies and are trained up for St John Ambulance staff (they use them at donnington you know!)

Its a great idea. If people are interested, I can get some MSA guide books, which are very good.

People Marshall, as this is the closest you ever come to the action. You get access to areas of track that the public never see and can watch from the "loud" side of the fences.

Well, I'll volunteer.

I've marshalled at Castle Coombe before now, at Quarry, armed with a yellow flag and a telephone to the control tower... That was on a Panterra Owners Club organised Supercar Test Day.

I've also marshalled at a hillclimb at Ragley Hall in Worcestershire. Armed with a fire extinguisher, some concrete powder, and a broom. I spent most of my day brushing hay off the "track" where cars had clipped the bales for MY safety!!! (Try standing in direct line of a fishtailing TVR Tuscan racer and feel the adrenalin flowing brown and runny! ).

I've no training or experience other than above, but I'd be willing to help if we organised airfield days, etc.

I've got a high ranking St.Johns Ambulance friend who's willing to help organise an airfield day in the midlands, with full cover.

Beats watching "Team Knight Rider" on a Saturday, anyway!

Is there any requirement for track docs......voluntary or otherwise ??
If its local - I'd be more than happy to come along and help out.....
I've just written to the MSA to get more info, and I do regular track work already.
E-mail me if I can help.

Squizz,

If you want formal (and MSA regulated/approved) marshall training and experience, maybe consider joining the MAC which deals with the hillclimb events in our neck of the woods.

While you are doing that, Karen can sit under the trees with her feet up sipping G&T's and eating two dinners

Cheers

Ian

Squizz.
I didn't take it as a dig mate, I just missed a smilie off (in now! ).
I agree that if we do events outside of main circuits it would be a top idea. We will hopefully have some of these coming up soon so we'd need to look at it for sure.

Stef.
