Default New Scoobie owner - disappointed all ready :(

Well I say new to scoobies, had mine 4 months now though its been in the garage for the last 2 weeks

Have always wanted one since I learnt to drive and finally decided just before Christmas to px the Cupra for a 2002 bugeye. In good condition, been serviced every 3000 miles and had a new cam belt. After a good test drive decided it was the one for me so paid there and then and picked up the following day once the insurance was swapped over.

Once I picked it up stuck 4 new winter tyres on it and set to enjoying my new scoobie

Well 3 weeks ago, after it going in to he garage for new rocker cover gaskets the car made a loud bang whilst reversing out of the workshop. Garage had a look, could see anything wrong with it so sent me on my way home. Over the next week there was an odd noise coming from the gearbox so dropped it back at the garage for them to look at. They have dropped the gearbox and stripped it down, seems the bang with the center diff giving up.

Not happy and slightly fallen out of love with the car, hope when I get it back I fall back in love with it

These things happen when you buy teenage performance cars.

Gotta say mate...I only just part exed my Bugeye 2001 on Sunday for a 2004 blob...
I got the Bug in 2007 with69k on clock for £5700... I took her up to 154k and she's NEVER let me down. Needed a new abs pump and 2 bearings so I decided to part ex whilst she still had an mot...I told the dealer about the work that needed doing and he still gave me £1k part ex...even with the abs pump being dodgy...she was still destroying to Tarmac around cheshire on Saturday night. Sounds like you just dropped on an unlucky part of your bugs life.

As said above, I think your just unlucky mate. I drive my 2003 WRX daily doing a considerable mileage. Its a combination of normal commuting and some thrashing down lanes. I've had it for about 18 months now, and its 275bhp. It's been one of the most reliable cars I've had. Other than wear and tear items like brake pads, tyres etc I haven't had to replace a thing. Stick with it pal, give it another chance and you'll get back into it

Mileage, Price, Previous Owners etc? As said, it's a 13 yo peformance car, it may have lead a tough life. Doesn't sound too serious though. Hopefully nothing else will make a break for freedom anytime soon.

When you buy a second hand car you can never be sure of the life its really had. Yeah it may come with a full service history etc but that don't tell you the way its been driven over the years. You pay your money and take your chance. I have swapped cars for years now and on my 4th scoob and this so far has been the worst car I have ever had, not scoob but car. its cost me around £3000 in bits and bobs and labour (not knowing too much about cars don't help).
With a bit of luck, you will have many miles of motoring before anything else drastic with appear

Are the wheels and tyres all the same size front to back? That can cause the centre diff to go.

Why wasn't "the loud bang coming out of the workshop" investigated by the workshop?

When your car was having tyres fitted was it at any time on a roller brake tester? Most of these are only designed for 2 wheel drive cars and putting a four wheel drive car on them can be fatal for the centre diff.

Never went near a set of rollers as they was fitted in the car park at work

Just picked the car up from the garage, made it as far as work and it decided to dump its coolant everywhere, now waiting for the AA to recover the car

Could be just a loose or knackered hose?

Stick with it mate

Perhaps as you know at the moment it feels a little touchy carry a few light tools and spares like coolant and oil in the boot?

Cheers tom.

Are brake tests important when having new tyres fitted?

Top hose spilt leaving an impressive could of steam, just glad I was 500 yard from the work car park and not on the A41 where I have just been.

Trying but this is it's 4th fault and visit to the garage in 5 weeks now

Although ive only got a uk2000 T . im slowly replacing parts on it so situations like youre experiencing , are cut down on happening. Obviously everything cant be checked and changed due too cost , butim a firm believer in preventative maintenance as much as possible.

Just picked the car back up, had new top and bottom radiator hoses fitted, thanks Scoobyworx for the quick delivery. Loving the colour even if it wasnt my 1st choice but a great price

Garage have confirmed the 2nd hand gearbox is shot and needs to be replaced, will have the car back again in a few weeks to do that.
