Don't do it. The Type RA is defined by its gearbox. If you need longer gears, don't buy an RA.

That's along the lines I was thinking, it needs a gearbox rebuild anyway, or I wouldn't of even considered it.

It has been suggested to me though, by an owner of a type R that has done it.

depends what you want, longer gear will make motorway jurneys a bit more comfortable on the revs. but if your not doing alot of motorway miles prob not worth it.

Also depends if your gonna retain the 5 speed or swap it for a 6 speed.

Type R is different - it's the two door shell you're buying, and the P1 has longer ratios.

If you want higher gears in a four-door shell just buy an non RA car. The gearing is the only really meaningful difference between RA and non.

If it needs a rebuild anyway though then go for it.

Fair enough - I keep forgetting about DCCD. The diffs are different on some RA models too. I guess what I'm saying is other than the ratios the difference on the road is not great and if you're going to change the ratios it's worth considering non RA cars too. The weight difference only applies to early cars and doesn't really make itself felt - any classic is a light and nimble chariot by most standards.

I considered it for my Type R but was put off by stories of there being a big drop off in revs between 4th and 5th, although this does depend which RA box you have as some are shorter than others.

It would also lose some of what the car is about just for the sake of the very few motorway journeys that the car actually sees.

It does however reduce petrol consumption on long journeys, typically costs an extra tank full and a bit of fuel on the couple of occasions I've driven mine to Croatia and back, with the standard box I have really struggled to see much beyond 27mpg tickling it, where as the Blob sees 36mpg without too much fuss traveling between 70/80mph.

The drone of the exhaust is the worst part 4k rpm with a full 3" Miltek and that's with a de-res centre section, becomes very tiring after 2/3hrs never nind the 20 ish hours to get to my place in Croatia. But once here it does make up for it.

I think I'll stick with the RA 5th, its really not going to get used all that much, so it's more important to keep it original.

Had a longer 5th gear in my Type R and it was fine, yes there is a drop off in revs, but for dual carriageway/motorway cruising it was much more pleasant.

Now gone 6 speed and that's even nicer
