Default Fuel covers

Has anyone replaced a fuel cover? I fitted one as mine was scratched and it fits perfectly but it doesn't pop open when I pull the lever in the car, I have to jam something in the lever and gently prize it open.

You may notice I'm not mechanically minded - did I miss something obvious?

There is a plastic clip containing a metal spring. If the plastic breaks the spring no longer works.
