Default Warranty cover

Been looking for another car, and been thinking of getting one from a dealer with a warranty, normally i always buy private. But decided to get one from a dealer.

I've only ever bought one car with warranty from a dealer years ago. But not quite sure what i'm covered for. Few dealers offering 12-24 month warranty which i like the sound of

My question is

1/ What am i covered for, eg engine failure is my main worry

2/ Do they pay out, anyone had any experience in claiming

Any other advise would be appreciated

Depends on the car / dealer

My mate had a brand new Kia , had engine issues they took it strait back and gave him a new car

Got my wife's astra from a car supermarket type place , 7 months later had a radio issue they wasn't keen on sorting it but pestering them they done it

Think it's consumables they don't really cover

it depends on the dealer and what warranty company they use. Most decent dealers will sort most issues out within the first couple of months before sending you to the warranty company. Ask your questions to the warranty company before making your decision and make sure you get the answer in writing. Depending on the age and mileage of the car you choose, you may only be covered for a small % of the final bill so it's worth checking that as well.

I have an RAC Full comphrensive warranty on the Audi, which came form the dealer I bought it from - it means if anything goes wrong I drive it in to an Audi delaership and RAC pick up the bill. Well thats the theory, I imagine in practice, they like all insurance companies will try to find a way out!

There are different levels of warranty cover from RAC, worth looking in to.

What level of cover did he have? There are three levels. Mine covers injector failure.

Sounds like he had the basic or mid level policy. The fully comp one is super expensive but covers it all.parts and labour

Is that main dealer warranty cover, general dealer cover, or warranty policy cover like RAC?

Good question, didn't know there was a choice lol

Last one i had was warranty policy cover, but i didn't renew it as said needs full service history and i decided to service the car myself as planned to keep it for a while

I had a "Gold" warranty on my WRX when I bought it - when it developed a slight crunch when going into 5th gear I called the warranty company (VGS) and was told that they would not cover the cost unless it was actually broken.

I asked if that meant I should drive the car until it actually broke properly, but the guy told me I should "get it sorted quickly".

So basically the warranty *would* cover sudden terminal mechanical failure - however something preventative like fixing the synchro (before it all broke) was not covered.

Annoying as I thought I had some piece of mind when buying with the warranty - but only in very rare circumstances I guess.

I did take it to Extreme and I am sure Paul would have helped out by saying it was broken, but VGS actually said once the gearbox was out, they would send an engineer around to inspect it - which would have also added 48 hours to the job. Sigh.

Come to the conclusion that these 3rd party warranties are only worth it if you realise this golden info -

- Sudden major terminal mechanical failure with actual broken components - covered (hopefully)
- Everything else - not covered

Luckily the warranty was thrown in as part of the bargaining on the car and I didn't pay extra for it - however I would have bargained harder in hindsight!

In my experience unless its a manufacturers warranty. It isn't worth the paper its written on. Most of those sold with used cars by independent dealers have as much integrity as a net curtain. Even those provided by well known companies like RAC & AA.

Save your money, kick the dealer in the nuts with a silly bid and keep a few quid stashed until you're satisfied its a good car.

Although they paid out in the end with some nagging

UPDATE:

Ploughman1963/APi combined: 1 - Turkeys: 0

We now have acceptance and an authorisation to proceed to the value of the policy in force.

Ploughman has been mightily inconvenienced by this and his persistence has paid off. It is a case of not getting despondent and keeping at them.

A result.

They are a complete waste of money.
The first thing they automatically say is 'sorry but that's not covered.'

A friend if mine bought a 2007 seat Leon with 90k on the clock this year. A week in and the heater/air con motor failed. Garage supermarket didn't want to know and neither did the warranty company. After a few carefully worded emails, I managed to get £200 out of them (£100 each).

Basically they just said that it was normal wear and tear so tough luck.
Once I pointed them to the sales of goods act and that it has to be fit for purpose for a reasonable time, they finally backed down.

Don't expect it to cover you for anything. Unless you are up for a fight.

Indeed they did, in that case the claimant had a good and helpful professional behind him (API) It's the way warranty companies go about their business that stinks. If you are confident you can out wit their wriggling and squirming should you have to claim, go for it.

Don't know what to do now. Whats the best one? The one thats most likely to pay out?

My main worry is engine failure. Don't want to pay out 5-6k and engine go pop. Thats why most of my cars i at most pay 2-3K

Buy a £3k subaru and have an engine built by Paul Finch. You'll have every confidence its not going to go pop when ever you press the loud pedal.
