Just been out in heavy rain earlier this afternoon. Came across a quiet T-junction so decided to really give it some as I pulled out (no traffic about). The car was a right handful and ended up snaking over both lanes unlike my last car, Toyota Supra which was very contollable in the same situation.
Are Scoobs meant to be like that in the wet?

I run a 4-door STi version 3 totally standard running on Yokohama A520 tyres. I personally think the tyres are sh1te and have a lot to do with what happend earlier. Hopefully a new set of Toyos will sort this in the in the next few months. I may also alter the suspension and/or get the geometry checked.

Any comments guys?

Cheers

Nick

A520s are noisey bleeders as well. Thought wheel bearings were sha99ed until I had them looked at to find there was nothing wrong with them.
MichelleWRX1994 - what springs/dampers do you have fitted. + were you in Vodka Bar (Derby) over the weekend?

Mine was understeering like a pig despite bumpsteer (and springs prob make it worse) even on Toyos, but they do not have much tread left, and there is a bit more power than when it last rained. In the dry it runs too much boost for the intake temperatures, in the wet it has too much torque for the poor little tyres

Try again with the Toyos scrubbed in, I find the scooby very nice to handle in the wet with the Toyos

I also have stiffer suspension and altered geometry settings, altogether I have a rather tail happy beast that responds how I want it to

Had a bit of snakeing with P-Zeros, just had Toyos fitted, but yet to find out about the wet handling. Agree about the A520's, had them on my 1.9 Gti, excellent in the dry, but absolutly cr4p in the wet.

The rear tyres on mine have about had it. The fronts have loads of tread left though! Want to change all four together but can't justify slinging two good tyres. Any suggestions?

Bite the bullet and change them - you won't enjoy the car until you do. I think mine went off because I took them round knockhill - they were fine before that.

Sell two tyres and buy four (just done it myself) Rotate the four new tyres to gain even wear, and do all four again!

I love my car even more in the wet than in the dry!

You just need to learns its characteristics - of all the Stis the 4-door has the most benign handling

skoobidude,

I have the full GAB suspension on my car. A lot of people can't tolerate the ride, but I find it great. Go over a crisp packet though and it jolts your teeth an acquired taste for sure.

I wasn't at the Derby do, I couldn't make it

I switched to Toyo Proxes about 18 months ago and they are great wet or dry.

Not as much dry grip as Yokos but any breakaway is progressive and more controllable with the Toyos.

Its a shame search is down - there was a thread about a year ago where people were rating various tyres for grip (wet and dry), noise, wear and a couple of other criteria that I can't remember right now.

IIRC, a huge number of respondents favoured the Toyos over most other makes, for everyday usability at least.

I definitely like the Toyos progressive breakaway point, makes sliding out of corners much more enjoyable

Mine handles like a dog on bold 205/45/17 Falkens. I seriously think my Fiesta XR2 was quicker around the corners on P6000s.

I used to wonder why my scoob used to slide about like a greasy jelly in the wet - then I found out. Firestones!! never again.

i have a my99 uk 4 door turbo

maybe i just havent sat on the edge long enough to find out what to do...

tho this morning on overtaking someone... felt car slide a little... its that sort of twitch that makes me nervous in the wet...

never had geo checked tho... so could be miles out

ive got toyos... better than the s02s i had before...
at least these give some sort of warning

s02s understeered loads in the wet...
toyos seem more tail happy.. maybe they bite through the water better on the front...

on ice.. car was fun... few doughnuts... not enough room to try slides tho... but thats provoking it...

wear seems even at 4mm tread left on all 4s...
i dont understand about the need to swap the tyres round...

The fronts get more hammer when you are cornering.Rotating them means the outside edges don't get as worn, which promotes understeer as there's less grip.Best tyres I've had were S02's.They have more grip in the wet than the Toyo proxes I had before but as previously mentioned, don't give as much warning of when they are about to let go.

Question

sorry for the digress....

I own a pug 306xsi 2.0 8v and use relli's P5000 ... would these be any good for a scoob????

I find them good in both the wet and dry, although I appreciate the difference in power etc

Just a thought.... do they have the diff splitter thing on your sti version.... this could of been set so more power goes to the rear....

My MY95 wrx doesnt even move in the wet... just been out and totally floored and it didnt even twitch... different to my old celica GT4 which was a bit tail happy in the wet...

Don't be too quick to blame the tyres! When I swapped my worn SO-2 fronts with the back tyres, the handling/grip was transformed!

Most people forget that where people come to a halt at junctions/roundabouts, excess tyre rubber is left on the road and poorly maintained vehicles tend to drip oil/diesel. Add to this rain, painted lines, manhole covers and a poorly maintained surface, then even 4WD struggles!

If you are going to compare tyres/cars, then you need to do the test at the same time & in EXACTLY the same conditions!

I once pulled out of my road in the wet & wheelspun uphill in third gear for 1/4 mile - the reason? A bus had had a serious diesel leak!

Just to add to this debate; if your car is a couple of years old and you need a new set of tyres my strong advice would be to get the car 4-wheel-aligned first before spending the money on new tyres.

Did this recently and it turned out to be the best £50 I ever spent.

My SO2's were shot after 9 months with unusual tyre wear on the inside of the nearside tyre and uneven wear on the rears. Turned out that the rear alignment was set in such a way that I was continuously correcting scrub (without me knowing it) and contributing to the tyre wear!

Apparently this is quite common with Scoobies as the suspension settles after a while and throws the tracking/alignment out.

HTH

Regards

WB

PS I am on Toyos now and they are superb. Don't think I will ever get back to Bridgestones.
