my blob sti has just started having cold starting issues,it turned over fine and started fine BUT it was running really rough for maybe 5-8 seconds almost like it was running on 3 cylinders

i had the map looked at and paul @ zen altered the cold start fueling and its alot better-not perfect by any means. i am going to try a new cts to see if that helps aswell. are you getting a strong fuel smell when started from cold?

I have the same issue as you,from reading up on it found that the CTS only really has effect with hot starting?
I have a thread on my issues and still not got to the bottom of it?

Really interesting to hear you guys are suffering from this, especially on newages. I have the same issue on my 93 RA, in that most of the time from a cold start it runs rough on the verge of cutting out for a few seconds before eventually picking up, and after monitoring for some time deffo feels like a misfire. My car is essentially stock so I don't believe this is generally an issue caused by mods.

So far I've tried;

2 x ECU's - No change
New coolant temp sensor - No change
2 x MAF's - No change

I've considered TPS and IACV but it just doesn't make sense to me and from following other threads I've heard of people replacing the IACV for brand new units which hasn't fixed the issue.

Do you guys find if you let the car run for maybe 2-3 secs rough, then switch it off and back on again, that it will then usually start fine? Also my car only does this from a stone cold start, if its only been an hour or so it'll fire up fine albeit sometimes you can feel a slight misfire on touching the throttle, but this usually clears almost instantly, is this the same for you?

Given the misfire nature I'm going to go back to basics next and try some properly gapped plugs, a set of professionally cleaned injectors, and look at coilpacks (my car has the newage coilpack mod), I do wonder if it could be a simple earthing issue somewhere, especially as it's happening across older and newer models, or perhaps a sensor shared across all years..

I should add my cars been strangely better last week in the colder weather (by cold I mean frost on the screen!), with a few perfect starts from cold, not sure what to take from that!

Does anyone know if cam or crank sensors can cause misfires? Or do they either work or fail completely?

That's the thing Gazza, for mine whether it's raining or sunshine the problem is the same, and in the very cold weather it's slightly better. So it doesn't seem to be a damp related issue. This has actually made me wonder whether its a fuel supply issue given the improvement in the cold weather..

I've tried everything in terms of the initial start, lights on lights off, fans on fans off, stereo on stereo off, priming the pump, starting with foot on clutch etc in case something was causing a power drain for that initial few seconds, but none of this has ever made a discernible difference.

I should add that for me once its running it drives spot on, there is no hesitation or misfiring, it's purely on the cold start.

If you think its possibly fuel related have you tried a new fuel filter?
