Classic or Newage dedicated track car
Hi all,
I have just bought a 2002 bugeye Impreza sti prodrive style(has everything standard).Im looking to make the car a dedicated track and drag car with stripped interior/unwanted things etc
Im still deciding though if i should dismantle the car and put everything that fits in a classic impreza and make that as a dedicated track car.To source one is not that much of a problem as i know of a very tidy ej15 one equiped that costs as much money as i get for the full prodrive style kit.Im aware that all the counterparts (from ej15 to sti ej20 turbo)use the same shell so i dont think its much of a prob about being an ej15 shell
Which one you recon will be best as a dedicated track/drag car?
Though this will not be a fast project i would like to know which route i should take to start on a good note.
Many thanks

That's not an option mate as to find a wrx classic where i live you're looking for an easy 7,000 pounds and thats just a stock car let alone a 6 speed, avcs, brembo etc equipped one
Just to note I can work on the car so wont have any expenses in labour as im a mechanic by trade

Setting the massive amount of work aside, if it were me I'd go classic. I've had two new ages (WRX & STI) and now have a classic. If I'm honest the classics been my favourite even thought cost a fraction of what my blob STI cost.
Most stuff from your bug STI will fit up straight to the classic shell.

Keep the bugeye, better engine, gearbox, brakes, avcs. Strip it and add a roll cage for a very rigid car that is less likely to break compared to a classic. Remove air con if it has it and fit a small battery. Remove all trimmings. If you're going to do it , do it hardcore. Get some r888 tyres or bridgestone 70's if you want longer runs and stiffer side walls.

The newage cars have a stiffer chassis to start with so I would stay with that to be honest.
You can easily get high 300's for not a lot of money.

Classic is circa 200kg lighter to start with, so cage and brace either and your still onto a winner with the classic, power to weight advantage will always be with the classic. I would do what you say in your OP and transfer everything from the bug into a Classic shell, it will be a very good, fun track car.

There is about 30/40 kg difference in the drive train but the rest is in the shell, so even with the newage drive train your still going to be more than 150kg to the good in a Classic, all other things being equal, ie cage etc, which equates to somewhere around 2 passengers @ circa 11 stone each.
If you've ever had a car corner weighted and set up properly thats going to cost you around 50bhp, my V3 Type R really notices 1 passenger of around 12 stone@ 330bhp it's a different car with only 1 passenger, with 2 it's positively slow compared to when I'm alone.

Thanks all for the replies
I assume that the 4door classic impreza is lighter than a type r so for weight comparism its better than the type r.

Assumed the the 'box, brakes etc would weigh a lot more. I've never had them on scales though, so I'll take your word for it
Only way to know conclusively, is for the OP to take his Newage to a weigh-bridge, then re-shell with a Classic and weigh again...
