advice on what to do
Hi everyone . Ive just bought a gb270 57 reg from a trader on the 1,8,14 at a cost of 10k . As its done 69k 1 owner and unmarked in and out. within one day there was a problem , the actuator was stuck only boostingn 5 psi . The garage couldnt get a 2nd hand one and you can only get new forge ones at a cost of £167. The trader/garage ended up paying £80 towards this as the warrenty you get when buying from a trader only covers engine and box , which next brings me to . My new problem ..the cars been off the road for 2 weeks as we try and sort the actuator out, had it back running propley 1 day and if you drive it hard for more than a few mins it overheats and spits all its water out .which im sure its the headgasket . Its goin in later to get cheacked out . My problem is I will have only done 170 miles since buying the car . 100 of them was to get home as the garage is in manchester im in derby . Ive got a bad feeling the garage wont want to sort it. Any one else ever had a claim agenst a garage/trader .

Send them a letter - recorded delivery - or email to outline the problem; that legally makes them aware of the problem.
Briefly outline what you want to happen with it and tell them you are not using the car until they look at it as you do not wish to possibly cause further damage to the car.
Call them after a day to first make sure they got the letter (an email they can deny getting unless you 'cc' a mate as well) then ask when they are able to take the car in for inspection.
If you do get anyone else to look at it whilst they are thinking about it make sure they dont know about it.
take it from there....

have you actually phoned them to ask them yet? they might be willing to be reasonable, no point jumping straight in with legal letters etc, give them a call and explain.

10k? Are you nuts?
As said, what has the garage said?
Didnt you yes drive it before you bought it?
Was the actuator fault evident then?
May be it was set low so that it would mask the head gasket failure
All sounds a bit dodgy to me.
But you said that the warranty covers engine and gearbox failures yes?

Feel for you Chris, sorry to hear that.
Check who you acutally bought it from, who's name is on the receipt/ sales invoice. You need to know this first before you get started on letters etc...
I have known of individuals who own subaru specialist garages, but sell cars personally, you dont even make the distinction until somthign goes wrong and its then you realise that private individuals selling to other private individuals have different trading terms than business's selling to individuals.
This is I am sure not the case with you, but might be worth checking, and for anyone else who is buying from a trader, check who you are buying from, because when an individual sells to another individual, it is ' sold as seen'.

I would go down the full refund route as well, you paid over the odds for a GB270 at 10k....
Try and get your cash back then move on to another scoob at the right price....

As has been mentioned before, contact them in the first instance and see where you stand with them. If you go in all guns blazing with legal letters etc it might get their hackles up and they might become more reluctant to help you.
But if the worst comes to the worst then the warranty will surely cover it as you said it covers engine & gearbox yes?

No its not from cheshire . But another garage. In wigan . Ive phoned them im awaiting a call back hes told me to get some prices . So i have . Rcm wants £4208 incvat scooby clinic are just over 3k . Another garage near to me wants £1800 . Theyve done a few in the past . Hes on about me claiming off a warrenty that he will put on the car for me so it wont cost him . And yes seems strange that the actuator was knacked and only running 5psi as if to hide the fault . And when i drove it i didnt hammer it etc . Till i was home thats when i thought it didnt feel right and went to get it checked . Its since broken down and overheated etc again this morning and has been tuck to a garage who has confurmed its the head gasket .

Chris,
I went through this little over two months ago with an 06 STi, you can find my thread under profile page.
After all the ball ache I went through and several letters, my advice is to get a full refund, and buy something else from someone else.
Bearing in mind I paid 10k for an 06 STi with 46k on the clock, I think you paid way too much. Then again I don't know the WRX market so I could be wrong.
Hope this helps and best of luck.

£10k is a very steep asking price and you will never get anywhere near that on a re-sale. The issues should have been picked up when you bought it and by doing research on here you would have discovered the know issues.
Does it have the GB270 leather seats and Clarion Sat-Nav? If not then you have paid way too much.
