STi key - possible group buy
#1
Mike, as i understand it anybody with a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm will be able to use this key, as effectively the replacement of the alarm negates the necessity for the alarm.
Following a long conversation with Mike today. Here is how you test to see if you can use the JDM STi key with your car. Remove the small phillips screw from the key boss, and split the key. Next using the lock & unlock buttons, push the module out of the key boss, leave this in a safe place on a none conducting surface, and at least 30' from the car. Now try and start the car with the key, if it starts, then you can use the STI Key. From personal experience my big key locks and unlocks the car, but doesn't set the alarm using the key boss buttons. Use of the Thatcham 1 alarm fob locks / unlocks, and arms / disarms the alarm / immobiliser.
So now you know

I have finally tracked down a supplier for the JDM STi key
as seen here. The price will be £25 per key (Ouch!!) delivered. i know that this is pricey, but with import duty and vat thats the cost. If you are interested let me know - we need a minimum of 10

From a previous thread AFAIR
These keys are not chipped so apart from looking great they will not work on UK Spec cars (STi and WRX's)
Sorry to pi$$ on anybody's parade

edited to say the above coments relate to MY01/02

Sorry "classic" Impreza guys, it's a thicker key.
I have a large stock of these, they will not work (on a UK car) without a transponder transplant.
Keys are with precision engineers trying to find a suitable place to put the transponder where it will still work.
Location is critical.
Grey import WRX/STi no problem as they don't have a transponder.
Should have a result by the end of next week.
Mike.

I s there a chance that this is a different key in the same style to the one for the new shape?
I only ask cos it has a piccie of the classic shape behind the key.
I know this is easy to add, but why would someone go to the trouble?

Yep, looks that way.
If you have a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm, (certainly in JGriff's case), the fitting of his CAT 1 alarm has circumvented the Transponder operated immobiliser.
Easiest way to check is follow John's instructions as above and see if the car will start with the transponder away from the key?
If not, I have some keys away at the precision engineers being slotted to carry the transponder (for those who haven't seen a transponder, it's approx 6mm x 4mm x 2mm), This will not spoil the key cosmetically.
