Hi everyone just given car a full service and decided next project is to lower the temps under the bonnet. Currently running 340hp so not sure a fmic is needed at this point? Ive researched plenty of ideas such as turbo blankets, auto intercooler sprays and even painting intercooler black... Wonder if anyone could shed any light as to how effective these ideas are and if theyre worth doing?

You dont need a FMIC at this point in terms of power, and I would be surprised if your under bonnet temps at this level are excessive, however making it cooler is never a bad thing.

Turbo blankets do work, cold air feeds from the bumper to the air filter, air filter heat shields, all things like this will help, wouldnt go too crazy on it though at this level.

i saw a program on painted intercoolers amd it was kinda myth bustered ..

on idle the black incooler which had been rattle caned black was like 35 oc on outlet the silver one was 43 oc on outlet .BUT as soon as they similated the car moving the black one was 19 oc and silver was 19.2 oc

the black one was cooler dew to a phase called raideatted and they used big words lol

You could look at header tank spacers, inlet manifold spacers and a turbo blanket

Thanks everyone. Yeh was looking at those radiator panels are they proven to make much of a difference? I also watched that video on youtube about the black intercoolers but couldnt make much sense of it all lol

Unless you know the OP, you might want to retract that statement, or at least clarify what you mean.

A newage Sti TMIC is more than capable at those levels, however classics will be struggling on TMIC's.

not quite under bonnet cooling, but, have you done the throttle body coolant bypass mod?

it helps to lower the air intake temp, especially if you sit in traffic a bit.
the coolant helps to stop the throttle freezing in low temps, but it's not really needed in England. but when the car is up to temp, the coolant in the throttle body is 80 deg and warms the air up as it enters the engine.

it's only a 5 min job, if you are worried about it in winter, just swap it back

This is a very simple and effective mod that very few do or even are aware of.
Just did mine today while putting the engine back together.

I'm going to be spacing the bonnet by 20mm also the tbcb mod to reduce temps.

Can anyone give more details of how to do the throttle body mod please?
Loving the sound of this.Am noticing quite a bit of a drop off in power in this muggy type of heat were getting at the mo!

There is a black metal water pipe that runs from the water pump up the front of the block and over the top towards the rear of the engine. Halfway along the top of the block you'll see a rubber hose branch off that metal pipe and go (if it's an early car) into the idle control valve. It passes through that and then across into the throttle body, through the throttle body and then back down into the main water pipe that runs long ways across the block.
All you have to do is bypass the throttle body, just run a hose from the two water pipes.

Probably not the best description but once the inlet is removed it all makes sense

I see the logic behind this mod but in all fairness, at idle and slow cruising, heat soak from TMIC is probably going to erradicate any saving from removing the throttle body cooling pipes, yes i know they get hot, but i really cant see any improvement in intake temps from this mod, always liek to be proven wrong so if i am, cool, but still, any one done any intake temp logs before and after and on the same day i.e air temp identical ?

And before anyone mentiosn duncs recording, considering he has an intake mod done, that most of us dont have, his readings are useless

Not under bonnet but everyone should fit a Zerosports thermostat if they use their car in anger
