Default Lesson learnt I'm an idiot!

I recently read a good thread on here called myth busting on induction kits posted by DmcL. Just so happens I have a hks mushroom filter lying around,I understand this would have no positive impact on performance but do like the way it sounds. After reading the thread I felt confident I could fit without mapping. My problem is I have a version 2 my1996 and don't have the £1000+ for an aftermarket ecu and mapping,so I went ahead and fitted it
I've been driving for the last 4 days with no problems then yesterday after driving it quite hard my boost went from 1.1bar to 0.6bar
Anyway after reading lot of good threads on here and spending the morning putting my standard airbox with hks panel filter, plus doing an ecu reset I am glad to say my ra is back to its old self and holding good boost. I just hope I haven't done any long term damage.
I leant my lesson it really does pay to do a lot of reading before doing any modifications and guess I'm gonna have to save up for an mappable ecu.
Cheers scoobynet for all your help

You don't need a £1000+ for an ecu mate.
You can get an ESL board fitted and mapped for less than £400 from most mappers.

Nice one joe I didn't think my ecu would take an ESL board
I will do some more reading and look into getting a good mapper.

Yep yours will take an ESL no problems pal. Speak to Andrew Carr. Great bloke he mapped mine. He's also mapping my newly built engine. Can't recommend the bloke enough.

Just speak to one of the reputable mappers on here, they will confirm what is or isn't possible.

Good luck

He's from over Lancashire way, but come over to Yorkshire well Bradford actually, weekly. To do mapping for Richard Henry Motorsport in Bradford.
Best bet is to give them a call and get some info and if needs be get booked in.

£400? Are you sure? The board is £295+vat and then the remap, so factor around £650 all in I would say.

In honesty I'm a bit out of touch with these things so it could well be more as welloibeefhooked says.
All I know is its cheaper than alkatec and is a great option

This is getting a bit more expensive
I have seen a couple of apexi ecu's with commander for about 400 ish.
Do these have to be mapped or are they just plug and play with the user abel to make adjustments via the commander?

This is better than the £1000 I thought it might have cost me.
Do you know of a place that could do it for 550 mate?

Simon jgm. Duncan racedynamix both travel to you if needed.
Powerfc is not as good as ESL. No knock control amongst lots of other things and needs mapping anyway.

Speak to Andy Stevens about the esl. I bought mine and loaded it with the oe 6s map and then tweaked it myself from the basic map. If you are not too far away from stock and can use det cans and wideband to monitor things carefully then try yourself but know the risks when doing so.

As for the apexi route, I was thinking this at first but the esl package blinds it completely in terms of functionality.

Do you mind me asking how much it cost you and where is Andy Stevens based?

It's for sale on the website if you want the ECU to self map or to map later:

http://www.enduringsolutions.com/shop/

Otherwise speak to Racedynamix, JGM, etc for install plus mapping.

So £295+150 for board, cable and software. This is getting better
Just got a small water leak to sort which looks like it could be water pump, this will set me back a bit but ESL looks like a great option.
So am I right in thinking once the board is soldered in(I have a mate who's good with electronics) I would be able to keep the map that's on the ecu at the moment until I'm ready or brave enough to have a go at re-mapping?

I didn't like the dump valve, nor did the car that's why I binned it.
Think I was misinformed about the dump valve keeping the turbo spooled up better, but I hated the sound and car ran like cr@p!

Yes, you can have the oe map loaded and run it from the off. I did this with mine as its totally stock so all I did was check fueling and ign to ensure it was safe. Map from there.
