Been told my MAF could be on the way out. When its idling the revs tend to jump a bit between 500-800 rpm. Also when approaching a stop and flooring the clutch the rev counter drops to 0 but picks up again. As yet car has not stalled.

I have the standard system (not induction) and the car is an MY99 - 4 weeks out of warranty [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

I've been told by a dealer that I could try cleaning it with carb cleaner to see if that sorts the problem. Is this possible?

Otherwise can anyone recommend any breakers other than grade A subaru that could supply a secondhand one?

i had the same problem on my99 tried cleaning maf wire or whatever it is with brake cleaner and it worked and is still working but be very careful , expensive to replace!!!!.

Brake cleaner? Is that better to use than carb cleaner then? Where did you get it from (Halfords? is it labelled Brake cleaner?) and how did you clean it?

Sorry for all the q's - I'll be very careful as I know its expensive to replace, hence trying to sort out my existing one

Also - just to note that I do not seem to have any other issues except for the slightly uneven idle.

Neil,

I've witnessed the brake carb fix (it did work BTW). T-UK and John Banks did this on SCOSaltire's car up at Knockhill. It fixed the problem and is still going strong.

You should be able to pick up a MAF sensor for around £50-£60 now. It was always sold with the housing, but in Greece and the US, Subaru are selling the sensor on it's own.

I'd hassle the Dealers to source you the MAF seperately. Or you can always get it from the US.

yep you can get it from halfords it's just the same stuff basicaly as carb cleaner has long as it evaporates .

you will have to take the maf housing off the air intake and keep spaying the stuff in the opening both ends older models you could get and cotton bud and carefully cleen it but it's all cased in on the my99/00 so keep blasting cleaner in it.

Join the club mate, same bloody problem last week. Had a K&N panel filter in mine. Changed this back to the original and cleaned up the wire mesh of all the cr*p. Touch wood once the ecu was reset no problems. Better than paying £250ish + vat.

Well, taken it off the car and sprayed it all and cleaned up everywhere. Just gotta let it dry/evaporate, then its testing time!!!
Had an ITG on mine - glad I kept the Subaru standard one coz thats going back in instead.

You can now buy the sensor on its own for about £80 from a dealer.

So even ITG aint safe eh ah sod it i have a MY97 so with a bit of luck my MAF can take the 30% increase air flow? from da performance panel even if i dont wana take the pi$$ too much with an induction kit jobby

Jawa out of interest does the ITG panel make a different sound compared with da standard even if not as OTT as the full monty induction bad boys?

No mate - couldn't tell any difference in sound whatsoever.

Well, I've cleaned the airbox, piping, MAF with loads of brake cleaner, dryed it all thoroughly, back on the car with standard subaru element and its exactly the same. Still idling probs. Still doing the drop to 0 on florring the clutch and back up again too

I'm stumped. Going to try a mates MAF which is working ok on his on Fri afternoon, if it still does it then its not the MAF.

I'm open to any other suggestions too

Isn't the MAF on the MY99 a "hot film" variety wotever that means dunno does this make a difference in how it should be cleaned or wotever? No use wotsoever but fort i'd add yet more confusion No but i got it off chiarks fine site as per chiarktastic so erm good luck i guess

More than likely the MAFF

I had same problem on 99 5 door.
Changed O2 sensor last week, no cure. Changed the MAFF under warrenty just today, now idling perfectly

Can you not extend the warranty now, i thought they gave you about a month or so...
