Engine exchange help.
hello,
you prob get thousands of these, but here we go, any help would be appreciated. getting my hands on a 1999 impreza sport awd and intend to put off road for rally project. I reckon id need more poke so was thinking or changing engines for wrx at least but probably sti. Are the engines a straight swap for size and mountings or are the engines complete different sizes. I know gearbox, brakes ect would also need changes but as far as engine and ECUs go what am I looking at as a project or is this ambitious. Any advise or recommendations would be great. apologies for my lack of knowledge on the matter.
cheers

theres alot mroe than just the engine thats different between them. so realy depends on how far you are going as in modding for rallying.
If your doign a full strip, weld in roll cage then uprated parts like suspension, brakes, gearbox etc then sport is a good point, most of the parts from the wrx will get junked (same with sti) so no point in buying a car to scrap most of it.
Dont forget a rally car takes an absolute pounding.

I would wager you could get a clean WRX with the shell bearings gone for about the same as a running sport. Then you'd have everything you'd need just an engine rebuild required. Or then source an engine.
Maybe something like this....?
