Carbon roof fitting
I'm fitting a carbon fibre roof for a member who I'm sure will be along to name themselves shortly.
I thought it would be a good idea to show you all how we have gone about the job.
First job was to remove the roof rails and screens

P1010891.jpg?t=1320170801
P1010887.jpg?t=1320170819
Next job was to remove the headlining, this needs to come out due to the roof strengtheners having a bonded connection to the roof skin its self. to stop vibration.
P1010897.jpg?t=1320170840
P1010896.jpg?t=1320170837
Next job was to clean the excess windscreen bonder from the top area of the front/rear screens to allow us to see the spot weld points, once they are clear to see the spot weld drilling could start,it is advisable is trying this job to get the best spot weld drill you can get hold off given you can't get the pressure on the drill like you would if doing a quarter panel due to it being up high and downward facing so you want a good cutting drill.
P1010889.jpg?t=1320170813
P1010890.jpg?t=1320170807
Once they are all done we could gently ease the roof skin off and clean up the area ready to trial fit the new carbon skin which is a far as we got today.

P1010898.jpg?t=1320170847
I will keep the updates coming as we progress

Ryan everytime i think you can't out do yourself with some kind of wierd and wonderful project you do it.
Well done mate i'm sure that is going to be the nuts when done althought i would hate to think of the cost. Would be a nice idea but i think a warp would be as close as i can afford.

I've got some pic's ready on the camera but haven't had a chance to put them in the bucket and post yet.

Today though saw some good progress on the roof, the first job was to have a trial fit of the carbon roof skin.
P1010929.jpg?t=1320327024
P1010931.jpg?t=1320327045
As you can probably see from the picture it is oversized by around 5-7mm so we needed to shave a bit of material off to make for a good fit, once we we're happy with the fit we then primered the area around the roof and the roof skin where the bonding agent was to be applied.
P1010941.jpg?t=1320340410
P1010942.jpg?t=1320340435
Then the bonder was applied to the roof and supports.
P1010943.jpg?t=1320340457
Then we fitted the skin and applied even pressure until the roof was pressed down and we were happy with the positioning, with how well the skin fitted we only needed to clamp down the front and rear faces without the need to apply pressure to the top it's self so credit to the company that supplied the panel.
P1010946.jpg?t=1320340530
P1010948.jpg?t=1320340578
P1010949.jpg?t=1320340600
P1010950.jpg?t=1320340622
I will post some more pic's when we have removed the clamps and placed the screens in the holes and it's a done deal

Ryan, if youve done it already and ive missed it i apologise.
Please can you weigh the existing stock steel roof. As cool as the carbon one is, im pretty sure the weight saving is very much a perk rather than a primary function of a carbon roof over a stock one that doesnt have a sunroof anyway.
Cheers mate

It is more for looks than anything else really but it does look very nice indeed!!
I will updating with pictures of the job done as soon as I can get into my photobucket account to which I'm struggling at the moment for some reason
