Carbon roof fitting

9 Attachment(s)
I'm fitting a carbon fibre roof for a member who I'm sure will be along to name themselves shortly.
I thought it would be a good idea to show you all how we have gone about the job.

First job was to remove the roof rails and screens
Attachment 55918
Attachment 55919
Attachment 55920
Next job was to remove the headlining, this needs to come out due to the roof strengtheners having a bonded connection to the roof skin its self. to stop vibration.
Attachment 55921
Attachment 55922
Next job was to clean the excess windscreen bonder from the top area of the front/rear screens to allow us to see the spot weld points, once they are clear to see the spot weld drilling could start,it is advisable is trying this job to get the best spot weld drill you can get hold off given you can't get the pressure on the drill like you would if doing a quarter panel due to it being up high and downward facing so you want a good cutting drill.
Attachment 55923

Attachment 55924
Once they are all done we could gently ease the roof skin off and clean up the area ready to trial fit the new carbon skin which is a far as we got today.

I will keep the updates coming as we progress:thumb:

Good job :thumb:
Is there much weight difference between the two or is it literally a "just for looks job" ;)

euan_r 02 November 2011 02:12 PM

subscribed, interested to see whats involved. thinking of changing mine sometime as have a few stone chips on roof and carbon fiber would be good replacement for long term ownership, i think.

a5h 02 November 2011 05:18 PM

Ryan everytime i think you can't out do yourself with some kind of wierd and wonderful project you do it.
Well done mate i'm sure that is going to be the nuts when done althought i would hate to think of the cost. Would be a nice idea but i think a warp would be as close as i can afford.

kirstybumx3 02 November 2011 08:10 PM

Where's the updates???? You can't tell me you've been sitting on your arse doing jack today! :D

No update from yesterday as we are painting the engine bay along with doing the roof so that got done to allow it to cure before leaving.

Today though saw some good progress on the roof, the first job was to have a trial fit of the carbon roof skin.
Attachment 55930
Attachment 55931
As you can probably see from the picture it is oversized by around 5-7mm so we needed to shave a bit of material off to make for a good fit, once we we're happy with the fit we then primered the area around the roof and the roof skin where the bonding agent was to be applied.
Attachment 55932
Attachment 55933
Then the bonder was applied to the roof and supports.
Attachment 55934
Then we fitted the skin and applied even pressure until the roof was pressed down and we were happy with the positioning, with how well the skin fitted we only needed to clamp down the front and rear faces without the need to apply pressure to the top it's self so credit to the company that supplied the panel.

I will post some more pic's when we have removed the clamps and placed the screens in the holes and it's a done deal:thumb:

BLU 04 November 2011 10:42 AM

Gonna look awesome when its back together :thumb: (it does already btw)
Will it be done then or are you gonna put a few coats of ultra shiny 'prodriverules' lacquer on it?

I'm afraid the 'special Prodrive lacquer' has to wait for now Trev as the car is leaving to go to poleposition to have the engine etc installed and then it will come back to have the whole car painting and some prodrive lacquer on the roof.

Great job and project, can't wait to see the final product man :D

wrxcook 06 November 2011 08:26 AM

Id like to see this finnished very interesting

kirstybumx3 06 November 2011 01:16 PM

any more updates on this ryan? ;)

frayz 06 November 2011 05:26 PM

Ryan, if youve done it already and ive missed it i apologise.

Please can you weigh the existing stock steel roof. As cool as the carbon one is, im pretty sure the weight saving is very much a perk rather than a primary function of a carbon roof over a stock one that doesnt have a sunroof anyway.

Cheers mate

Sorry Frayz but it's already installed but you are right tbho, although the carbon roof skin is a significant amount lighter than the steel one it's a minimal amount of saving given the existing skin is only of a light weight it'self.
It is more for looks than anything else really but it does look very nice indeed!!
I will updating with pictures of the job done as soon as I can get into my photobucket account to which I'm struggling at the moment for some reason:confused:

Terminator X 06 November 2011 06:05 PM

kirstybumx3 06 November 2011 09:06 PM

the carbon roof is 2.2kg, a stock roof from a uk 2000 turbo car is around 10kg. im unsure if this roof is lighter due to it coming off a type r ;)

i hope this helps people out :D
