Bang went the Engine ........ re-build
Like a muppet.....& dont ask me has as it happened so quickly.....i selected 3rd instead of 5th on my close ratio gearbox in my 96RA ........... and BANG went the engine !!!
I've just started stripping it down to see the extent of the damage and it was a good one......

I lost an engine for the same reason.

I reused the crank and rods and they went on to do another 30K miles in my hands and a fair few more in someone elses too.
Block was scrap, as were the pistons, heads, and 1000mile old VF34
You live and learn.

it made a clatter and a rattle and a lot of $!@* &%£$ !!! from me too 
Daz, was your crank as bad as mine.... i think thats a write off. Pistons & rods will be replaced along with the oil pump & modine.
I'm on the look out for some forged rods & pistons when i get some funds.
Do you think that the block can be re-used though ?? if so should it be checked by anyone ??

Ouch. Looked like a really clean engine to start with.

How does selecting a lower gear make that happen? Is it something to do with the RPM being so high at high speeds or something?

My Crank and rods (Eagle) were fine had them all checked and they were bang on.
If I'd have had standard ros then I'm sure things would have ended up the same as yours or worse
Without seeing i properly I would say you may get away with reusing the block but for the sake of maybe £200-300 you might be better trying to source another CDB.
a CDB is not essential though unless your aiming for well over 500bhp.
Plenty of good ODB 2.0L blocks about.

How do people clean the blocks up when they are out of the car, i have read that painting them is a 'No No' as it can prevent them cooling as they should, so a silver coat wont be going on the block.
i have tried scrubbing it with WD40 and a tooth brush but it's still not sparkling as some of them seem to be after re-builds.

This about not painting blocks is complete bollocks. It's a water cooled engine not an air cooled one. I've painted all of my engines and have never had any heat related problems.
A couple of coats of hamerite smooth silver via aerosol will NOT cause ANY problems whatsoever!!
As for cleaning blocks you need to make sure all of the blanking caps are removed and any galleries can be accessed. I douse mine in engine and machine cleaner and then jet wash it several times. I also have an old dishwasher that I use and is perfect.
Just be thorough and do it several times. After you've finished make sure the mores have a good coating of oil as they will start to rust pretty much instantly.

That block wants throwing in the bin, sorry! One half is severely damaged compared to the other half. Chuck it in the bin or use it as a flower pot, thats all its good for in my opinion.

i was going to give it a spray to brighten it up.... but i guess it's for the bin
The 2 and 4 half isnt that bad, its the 1 and 3 half that is wrecked. Look at the damage to the bottom of the liners, its knocked a huge chunk out of them, especially between the two bores, the gudgeon pin access port for no 3 is also wrecked!
When i went 1st, 2nd, 1st at Donington a few years back, my ej22t block had less damage than yours. It is now used for dummy engine builds with a set of wrecked heads!

As P20SPD aka Steve said that block has had it, damage is quite bad.
Oh and don't bin it it's Aluminium you will get some money for it.

Have a look in the for sale section or run a search on closed deck blocks on here, i think wrighty had a gooden for sale complete with pistons rods and crank in the for sale section.
