Default Rear bracket for Gold Brembo's

FIRSTLY : MANY THANKS TO RENTONONE FOR SENDING ME HIS STEEL TEMPLATE, AS A GUIDE

Regarding fitting of Brembo's on the rear without having to change the Hubs and driveshafts & following on from Rentonone's thread https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...ghlight=brembo

I've knocked up the following 2 drawings for a Bracket.

I used Rentonone's old steel template as a guide and have 2 solutions.
These can be made out of 1/2 inch Alluminium and will only need a few washers/spacers in order to bolt to the hub and align with the disk (see above thread for piccies in situ).

Currently these drawings are only a 'GUIDE' as I have not completed the project yet. Although the important bit i.e the hole positions, for the STi bracket should be OK as these are a direct copy from Rentonone's template, which he has used to good effect.

SOLUTION 1 : Using STi 01> 316mm Disk
Name: BremboBracketSTi.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 24.4 KB

This solution would require you to modify the 190mm drum of the STi disk by sleeving and reducing to 170mm. See Rentonone's thread.......

SOLUTION 2 : Using WRX 01> 290mm Disk
Name: BremboBracketWRX.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 24.1 KB

This solution would require 'NO' drum modification. Although you do not get the full 316mm size of the STi disk, 290mm is still a fair bit bigger then the 266mm disk used on the Classic as standard.

SOLUTION 2 is my prefferred solution, and this is the bracket I intend to knock up in the next few weeks.

Read the text... 1/2 inch

But it's not essential. You can make it as thick or as thin as you like.
The only difference would be the length of the bolts you use.

Here's Rentonone's in situ....

Most aftermarket bracket are either 1/2 inch or an inch depending on application. I'm not sure what Rentonone used, look like about 10mm to me.

no worries mate, yep my brackets were 10mm thick but like you say they could of being thinner, thats all we had lying around in small bits. if anyone needs any newage sti caliper bolts ive got loads as they are the same size thread as the bolts i use at work, ive also got some of the spacer bar left, it just needs to be cut to suit, i carnt remember how long i made these as it was all trial and error.

I might get the rears done sooner now. My house move has just been delayed a month, so I've got some time now. We were supposed to be moving next wednesday .

Scott

Are you knocking these up or finding somebody to complete the work as I'd be interested in a pair potentially.

What is the difference in thickness between the 316mm and 290mm disks?

Revised Bracket drawings :

I knocked one up in wood, to fit the 290mm WRX Disk. I had to take a bit of material off the backing plate where the sliding caliper normally mounts. As the caliper-to-bracket and bracket-to-backing plate mounting holes are a bit closer for the 290mm set-up.

I should get my hands on some metal brackets next week.

I'm getting there.... in-between showers today

Got some WRX 2-pot pads today from APS (£33 inc VAT) to try.
But the pin holes are a slightly differnt pitch, so would require a slight elongation to make fit in the Brembo Caliper.

What was more of a concern was that the pad sat at a slightly different height, so my bracket dimensions above would be wrong.
Also the anti-rattle spring would not fit back on due to the different pad backing plate design.

These will be going back to APS (as they new what I was trying to do), but having them did help, as used them as a template to 'adjust' the size of the Brembo pads.

The Brembo pads are slightly too deep, so had to remove approx 9mm of pad material on inner and outer pads, and about 3mm of backing plate on the inner pad.
If this 3mm of backing plate is not removed it will foul on the 170mm drum backing plate that is shown in Dyney's post above.

i thought I was nearly there this evening, but it wouldn't quite fit and I am now babysitting.

Looks good though, although the old caliper is still attached, out of view.
And the new caliper is only held on with 1 bolt. I just hope no-one knicks it tonight or they may be in for a big suprise

JOB DONE

A little more cutting and a little more grinding and both sides are now on, bled and test run.....

Following on from the 'Pad Adjustments' detailed above, I didn't have to cut quite as much pad material off, as now when fitted it's obviouse I could of left another 2mm on the bootm of the pad. Not to worry though the pads are due to be upgraded to DS2500's anyway, so will 'adjust' these accordingly.

I did try the WRX 2-Pot pads and they will work with a little adjustment to elongate the sliding pin holes. The WRX pad material sits a little lower, but only by about 1 - 1.5mm. The only down side with these pads is that the anti rattle spring clip cannot be re-fitted.

At the moment the Caliper & Bracket are positioned/spaced using a pile of washers. I used 6 x M10 to mount the Bracket and 6 x M10 to mount the Caliper to the Bracket. These will be replaced with a proper spacer when I manage to get the Bro-In-Law to knock some up in his lunchbreak.

This is the nearside bracket fitted and shows the mounting plate where I have had to remove material.
This was done using a standard hacksaw (not a junior hacksaw, unless you want to be there all day) cutting out a series of sections and then grinding to tidy the finish, with a selection of drill grinding bits (the set I bought to port my headers ).

Offiside Bracket fitted, mounting plate re-profiled and painted.
Note : Disk guard also removed to allow 290mm disk to replace standard 266mm disk, this was quite easy to remove, just requiring the spot welds to be drilled out

Personally there is NO WAY I would ever pack the caliper out with a load of washers.. should be part of the bracket IMHO..

So.........what wheels will these fit under? (The WRX discs, specifically).

I have WRX '02 wheels on mine. OK, or not?

Also, what was the source for calipers, discs etc? I MAY have a source for 1/2" ally plate, and also for ally to make the spacers, which I'd then have ally welded on?

Would that be OK, David?

Hi i'm a bit of a newby here so could any tell me what the distance is for the newage 2pot caliper mounting holes i.e. the centre to centre distance for the brembo's according to Scott.t/Rentonone's bracket is 113mm, also does anyone have the centre to centre distance between the back-plate mounting holes and the newage 2pot mounting holes like on Dyney's bracket i.e. the distance required to make the caliper stand out enough to except the wrx 290mm disc, which on Scott.t's drawing for the brembo caliper with a 290mm disc is 10.5mm centre to centre or on the sti 316mm disc is 23.5mm. The reason is i'm working making a bracket like Scott.t's and Rentonone's which is a relatively easy and cheap to make, but designed to take the newage 2pot calipers like Dyney's which are in short supply and quite expensive. If i can gather enough info i would be able to give full detailed instuctions on whats needed and dimensions, and possible make them to order. Any help would be appreciated, i'm not trying to do Dyney out of business i just fancy a challenge and a cheaper more readily avaliable alternative.
Cheers

Only packed out to get dimensions for the spacers.
We don't all have the ability to laser cut/mill out complicated shapes. Plus a bracket machined out with that kind of waste is going to be expensive. Although I may enquire

Plus you'd be suprised and what brackets & spacers you get from some aftermarket kits.

Just spotted this on ebay....

Are they really the brackets that support the rear Brembo's on an STi.
.
.
.
.
.
Just looked on the parts database and the Calipers seem to bolt straight onto the Hub on an 02 STi. Can't see those bracket things on the dbase though....

Yep - they're the OE rear brackets, with some sort of harmonic damper attached.

Well, been running the rears for a few days now and all I can say is 'WOW' made a big difference.
Pedal feel seems alot better and some of the slack at the top of the pedal seems to of gone. Plus the car seems to pull up really well.
And all thats before the rear pads have bedded in.
