Default Electric folding mirrors? Want them automated?

I have been working on a wee gadget to auto-fold the mirrors in when the ignition is switched off. I use the folding mirrors quite a lot and it irritates me that the manufacturers don't include an auto option; so I've made one available. I call it the Mirror-Matic

It works on cars with electrically operated folding mirrors that have a manual rocker-type switch to work them, classic WRX or STi Scoobs included. The mirrors will fold out with either the 'Acc' or 'On' position on your ignition and will fold in when 'off'. The rocker switch can also override the module and fold the mirrors in if required whilst the ignition is on.

Here is a video of a prototype running on my old Skyline and a finalised version running on my current WRX Impreza. These will also work in conjunction with turbo timers and will fold the mirrors in after the countdown. Any alarm with a 12v output can be wired up to the module too for folding on arming.

These are simple to fit and can be removed without problems in a couple of minutes at some future time. The last one took me 10 minutes to install. Supplied with detailed fitting instructions and all wiring/connectors.

A gimmick? Perhaps.

Cool? Yes

Interested? £30 delivered via ScoobyShop as soon as I can get a vendor account sorted out. All my attempts to get one so far seem to be ignored

Interested parties please don't PM me asking me to sell them to you. I'd really like to do this legitimately through the proper channels, i.e. the club shop. That's what it's there for.

A 12v supply (you can take that from the hazard light switch on old classics), plus the cutting of three wires. All connectors supplied and eejit-proof instructions too.

Definitely a 10-15 minute job.

More and more interested. I'll keep an eye out for when you have them up for sale proper.

Not that I'm sure you'd want to, but if you wanted to disable the system without removing it temporarily, could you? For maybe if you were sitting in the car still.

will this type wire 1 side of the motor to a permanate live and the other to a switched live,,,,,, when turn off the ignition the switched live goes to ground and so will trip the relay into opening the circuit and turn in the mirrors,,,,, or will the mirrors fold out when the cars started as thats the part ive not tested yet ?

The unit has a permanent live. You could add a switch to that live if you wished to disable the unit.

This is not just a wiring diagram or trick, it's a device that I've developed to automate something that should have been automated from the factory. I'm not going to give away my secrets

Wink

The electric folding mirrors are the single, most useful item on my Forester T/tb. I 'try' to remember to fold them in every time I park up somewhere and have to in order to get into the garage and avoid the up and over door arms. Got some real gouges on the old UK Legacy mirrors.
If you are able to sell at some point then I would be most interested in buying a kit.

Cheers

JBL

I have some units made up. As soon as I can get a vendor account approved (been trying!), they'll be up for sale.

Unfortunately, despite several attempts, I've been unable to get a ScoobyShop vendor account (I just get ignored). I wanted to do it properly, support SN, etc by offering a discount to paid up members, but I can't wait around for ever

So, I've popped a few on fleabay. I didn't want to resort to ebay, but it seems I've no choice.

If people want a discount on the ebay price, I'll sell them direct and pass on the savings on the fees. PM me for details.

Will this work on new age JDM cars with a 2 way rocker switch?

Good question. Short answer: Dunno

Longer answer: I'd need to see at least a picture of the switch and its connector. Does the switch lock in place, i.e. does it stay where you put it or does it spring back like a momentary connection? If it operates like the early 3-position version, just without a mid-position, I'd say there's a good chance it will work just fine
