Default Audi Q7 4.2V8 TDI

Anybody own one or driven one?
Considering one as we have 2 dogs and our first little one on the way and the golf is simply not going to be big enough.

Have about £25k to spend

I've driven the Q7 3.0TDI. Don't bother, it's like driving a big clumsy bus around.

You'd be better off with the smaller Q5.

It's for the mrs to drive about in. Q5 is marginally bigger than a golf. I need 7 seats

If you dont need 4WD or the WAG appeal then I strongly recommend either a S-Max or Galaxy

Agreed; a 4motion Caravelle carries 7 in comfort with the image baggage of a big SUV.

They aren't cheap but I think they are great. You don't see loads either which is a bonus.

I do sometimes spot them; I always get them confused with our model, the California! Same grille, wheels, etc.

£25k would get a fairly good one.

I'm sure Ali will be along shortly but there torture for things going bang. I've had an A8 that destroyed the top end when the timing chain "popped". Just out of warranty & Audi wouldnt cover.
Suppose its like anything though ... Everyone will have horror stories for them.

I've driven the q7 4.2tdi, very quick for a big *** diesel I must say, IMO I don't like the look of them, they look too long and not very good drive if your drive o b roads, not keen on the brakes either,
Drove the new a8 4.2tdi just as quick for a 2.6ish tonne car (double glazing windows lol) just over 5 secs o-60. More of a cruiser, but by far the quickest diesel I've drove.

Il admit to liking the wag factor as does the mrs. It won't be doing a lot of miles tbh. Also seriously handy for towing the car trailer

x5 was my choice. Q7 under steer was chronic, X5 is seriously good on the road. Q7 goes through tyres at a ridiculous rate.

Pricey too, not sure if the budgets within op.

35d or sd would be a good choice, go for 7 seater if poss, but not much boot space when there up, but handy for football trips with mates etc.

Crap at off road but the best handling jeep out there

Seriously, what is the point in a big 4x4 barge being able to do a 5 second 0 to 60?

I agree, I have a 4.2 TD Landcruiser, and have just taken it, complete with wife and 5 kids to Germany for a wedding, 1300 miles in a weekend - effortless

I love the "sedate" performance, it will happily cruise at 80 all day

And if pushed can out drag a Prius from the lights

But soo relaxing to drive

A 4.2TDI Q7 is rather different to an older LC Amazon though! I think the Q7 is something like 300+ bhp, with massive torque. The LC is around 200 and rather leisurely (I've driven one to London and back twice!). I think it's 12s to 60 vs around 7!

Wife's grandparents still have there's on a 54 plate. Still goes well but niggles are starting to appear. Super comfy though and infinitely more capable off road.

Yeah but like TDW says, a 7 seater 3 ton 4x4 truck doing a sub 5 sec 0-60 is just absurd (outside the tiny mind of a premier league footballer and the tinier mind of a premier league wannabe footballer)

Ps your wife GP's in law 54 plate will be worth double what a similar vehicle is worth

Guy in my village just paid 17k for a 54 plate

Afaik, it's only the q7 6.0 tdi and x5 m50 that does around the 5 sec mark

I was talking about the A8 4.2 tdi that did around 5 sec mark which is same engine as q7

I test drove a Q7, Range Rover Sort, Cayenne, ML320 and a X5.
The Q7 felt like a barge massive, wobbly and horrible around the corners,
Range Rover Sport nice, fast and a great drive bit crashy but ridiculous MPG and pointless in having a fast 4X4
Cayenne nice but no diesel version and high repair bills, ugly front end lol
ML320 lovely car, quality interior and nice drive
X5 superb felt like being in a big 5 series didn't feel like I was in a big 4x4 drove great, handled well and was quite fast and diesel
So I bought the X5 but also would have had the ML320 great car.

But my mate bought a Zafira? VXR and that's a cool 7 seater he had S Max ST version I think before and loved that aswell but he needed to save some pennies and sold it and bought the cheaper VXR Zafira

Rear two seats are for dwarfs in the Q 7 and the boot floor is very high so very little boot space / nothing with the seats up.

I test drove Q7, X54d, Merc Gl, Disco and range rover ( but I wanted 7 Seats). Q7 drove alright and was fairly invisible for a big barge, x5 drove well ( but I felt like a **** while driving around in it), GL was good mix of understatement and comfort/ space - 7 big seats and still luggage space), disco felt old and has horror stories on the reliability front. Range rover felt ok despite the lack of seats but still suffered from that Chelsea Tractor image thing that it and the x5 share. All IMHO.
I'm buying a GL.

New Merc GL has 7 proper sized seats

No Cayenne diesel? My mate's got one and is very pleased with it.

RRS tdv8 with big f-off brembos does the job, maybe not as quick as the q7 but after a long long trip your not even sore, plus the fridge keeps your sannies from gettin warm
