80000!!! Time for a rebuild, rotary engine are very good for power/displacement but reliability isn't that good, rotor tips wear and quickly lose compression! Lovely cars to look at and drive though!

Hate these things, used to work at a Mazda dealer and the faults with these are unbelievable! The running costs/performance are not worth it.

Check it's had new oil lines for a start.

love the interior on these,my girlfriends brother had one, you dont change gear till the green light beeps, which was 10,000 rpm, its a bit weird to drive, theres no kick like a turbo or vtech, and theres no grunt like a 6 or 8 cylinder car, just smooth speed, it didnt really do it for me

Had our RX8 nearly 7 years now, 47k miles. In the last couple of months I've fitted a new stainless exhaust and new discs and pads to replace the original bits - when did you last own a car where the original brakes and exhaust lasted over 7 yrs?

Never let us down, only gripe is the fuel consumption, oil consumption isn't bad unless you rag it everywhere.

Nice car to drive, they're quick but not sti fast.

Alan, could you expand on the unbelievable faults, in my experience the RX8 is pretty reliable.

Main faults are coil packs need replacing often, some owners do them every 20k or less, check for white spots. Failing coil packs usually kill the CAT resulting in intermittent performance as it blocks up. Rotor tips wear causing low compression and hot starting problems, they revised the starter at least twice to try and help the hot start problem, recall for oil lines because they cracked, think that's it.

They burn oil so need checking and topping up every second fill (I always carried 1l with me when I had mine)
Biggest kicker is the fuel consumption, never got more than 15mpg ou of mine

I can't believe flooding the engine hasn't been mentioned yet. Are Mazda still thinking of bringing out a replacement for the RX8 i.e the RX9?

I have an RX-8. Lovely car, great handling but ridiculous on fuel.

Coil packs are a common fault but the rotor tips only wear if the car isn't treated properly - you should allowed it to warm up before driving, not exceeding 4k rpm until up to normal operating temperature, holding revs on switch off to burn excess fuel if used on short journey, keeping oil topped up.

Also get yourself some Protek R as a fuel additive to use every so often, keeps the wankel running nicely!

Very high maintenance but lovely car if you're prepared to look after it. Agree performance is outweighed by cost, the scooby is an economy run compared to my 8!

Why didnt they just fit it with the MPS engine? That would have been a cracking car.

Think it's weight, rotary's are very light so helps with the perfect weight distribution.

I'd prefer something heavier if it meant more power.

For great performance you need many things. The soon coming RX9 is alleged to have lots more power.
