Question 206 overheating

Daughter was returning from work last night and got stuck in an accident tail back.

She phoned to say coolant temp gauge had gone into super hot mode and asked it was safe to keep going.

I said to turn heater on full blast and directed her along some country lanes to avoid the queue. She made it home.

But why was it overheating in the first place?

I checked coolant level this morning and it was OK. I assume fan is working but will check this weekend.

Now it's a 10 year old car so perhaps coolant pipes are blocked with sludge/debris or someone has mixed anti-freezes and blocked system?

Is there a suitable product to clear system and do garages have any tools to give system a pressure flush through?

Any other comments welcome.

David
