Default thinking of buying a winter ****ter

thinking of buying summat cheap to run through the winter months, main reason is to keep my blob in mint condition, the roads i have to travel to work on are b-roads so get no grit and they are always treacherous-alwasy see cars in ditches etc and i would be mortified if i pranged the scoob,as much as i would love to have fun with it in the snow i know its a bad idea, the thing thats putting me off is more insurance cost and my drive is on a slope so after 3-4 months of being parked up the handbrake on the scoob could well seize up

anybody else buy ****ters to run thru the winter?

could even buy a impreza sport so i can still have 4wd

Was thinking of getting a cheap 4x4, but wonder if it's really worth it?

I bought a Isuzi Bighorn a couple of years ago for 600 quid - it was perfect and awesome in the snow. Kept it for over a year as the wife's car.

Subarus are great winter cars with the right tyres. False economy if you already have one to get something else unless you have something really special like a 22B.

We had an N reg astra 1.4 for winter and it was amazing. being a war veteran we didn't mind wrecking it.

It was the perfect weight and only ever got stuck in the snow once. brilliant winter car.

By the time you've bought it taxed and insured it, let alone service and maintainance then if something goes wrong with it, you will have spent well over the cost of a decent set of winter tyres.

I put the mrs in a cheap car all year round.

Must be a constant worry to have to drive around expecting to have an accident. I can understand the point you are making though.

Just picked up a 100K 2003 Volvo V40 with FVSH and a cambelt change for a grand. Winter tyres going on tomorrow, should be enough to get me around in the snow if it comes!
