As David said, rear axles are passive rear wheel steer, they have a bearing in the rear beam that goes and the wheels get play in them causing quite bad handling, get the car upto 50 or 60mph, or just see how much room there is between the arch and the tyre, you should be able to easily get a fist in there.
Electrics are another issue and heater matrix problems can lead to hg failures (also check for HG issues), heater should blow hot/cold, electrics normally fail due to the inter connecting loom between the door and bulkhead, £75 quid each from a dealer but need to be terminated so double that by 2 if you want both replacing by a good auto electrician (wires go brittle and break, normally causes central locking issues, window issues, mirror issues etc).
Airbag warning light, caused by trapped wire under drivers seat.

I should add that I think they are great little cars. I had a 205 1.9 tdi which zoomed past 220,000 miles and recently got a 306 1.9 non-turbo diesel for my daughter. Well designed and economical. dl

Turbo engines are reckoned to be pretty reliable because they have positive pressure in the cylinder most of the time, so the reciprocating forces on the crank/con rods etc are reduced.

Great info guys I'm no novice when it comes to cars but every make / model is different thanks for the input appreciate it , it's a cheapy from a mate at work so if I can save it from death I will .
I had 205 gti years ago and remember the rear subframe had seized which at the time was quite a pricy job, getting the info before I bought it would have saved me from buying it.
I know these engines are sound if looked after properly and will last for a long time as mentioned the car will probably fall apart before the engine gives up.

I have had my 2001 HDi 3 door for nearly two years now, it only let me down once when the battery died on me one morning. I have had to change o/s front wheel bearing which went after only 50 odd thousand mile and thats about it.
Best thing about it is 600 mile to a tank full, great for a everyday runabout which still looks quite good for a car designed in the early 90's.

If you get to the point of wanting to tweak the power or fit an i/c ... or a bigger one... Try the forums over at Turbo Diesel Owners Club. Guides for tweaking both Bosch and Lucas pumps.

good cars and good engines. some can throw con rods and lots have been tweaked due to the easy power that you can get from them..
Check the car over and check all the electrics as its mainly the door looms that go.
AC won't work on any of the 306's due to the bad designs.
If you want to run cheap fuel you can stick a bosch fuel pump onto the car and run veg / bio etc easily.
Most of the models came with a lucas fuel pump from factory.
rear camber is also a common thing.. with most of them getting on now most will have gone. Check the camber on both sides of the car
