Ford Focus not charging

Ford Focus not charging
On Sunday morning, the battery light lit up on my my 2004 Ford Focus 1.6.
Didn't get round to checking the battery until Monday night and with the engine on, the meter should just 11.73 Volts??
Then I read on the internet that the focus does not charge on idle, only under load? Any one know if this is correct?
Don't want to chuck on a new alternator if it is working fine!

Well car is now starting to struggle so I know it isn't getting charge.
Going to get a alternator from the scrappy today and see if it cures it.
If it does, I may get a shiney new one.
I just hope it isn't the ecu!
