DSG or Manual
#2
I would not go near one. A mate who specialises in gear boxes told me when they go wrong it can cost thousands to fix. Not sure how often they break but he told me he's done a few.

I have a DSG R32 that hasn't had any issues in 40K of use. (56K total).
Personally I wouldn't consider anything other than auto (of one kind or another) in a daily drive. Hence my truck is also auto.
DSG strikes a very good balance for ease of driving and occasional fun.
Apparently rebuilt boxes can now be had for £1200ish. Do a couple of manual clutches and your not far off that amount.

In admission, the manuals do suffer dual mass flywheel problems and those aren't cheap. If the person can't drive (i.e doesn't know how to use the clutch sympathetically), then it can damage the surface of the flywheel too, meaning it has to be replaced if the cluch wears prematurely from abuse.
Whilst expensive, its is fixable by the average experienced garage. A DSG box is not so simple to fix or rebuild.
Can't see how a DSG would fail from abuse, unless it was starved of oil. As the whole point of a automated transmission is to prevent the driver doing something stupid with it (i.e riding the clutch, side stepping the clutch, changing gear too fast, forcing into gear etc).

I have an S3 with dsg. Well its called s-tronic now.
Its fine, smooth once rolling and in "D" its smoother than my Range Rover gearbox...
In sport mode its much more responsive and without question faster than a manual.
If you want to drive to the book, just put it in manual.
Problems, only minor ones.
If you don't smoothly apply the throttle from stationary it can jerk a little.
Same on hill starts. But maybe a bit worse.
In manual mode it will change up at the limiter.
Reliability is fine so far but I only do maybe 200 miles a month in it.
