DPF and EGR issues when the millage gets high (70k ish), along with the usual Dual mass flywheels failings. If you get a low miller they are pritty strong. We`ve done 10K on our daily driver now with a Custom Code map, 190bhp with high 40s MPG makes for an econmical daily runner that is mildly fun when you push it.

Can you not have the DPF removed?

I've been planning to get a Audi A4 170 Tdi and have the DPF removed and mapped out.

Hired an Insignia TD SRI for the day and it was a lovely car. Much better than the B7 A4 IMO.

I've got a signum 2.0 dti. Was told to avoid the 1.9 cdti (120 and 150 bhp) they are a nicer/ faster engine but they have fuel pump failures 1k, injector problems bout 200 each, dpf, and on the 150 bhp the inlet manifold. Other diesels avalible that are more reliable are the 2.0dti ( can't fault reliability but couldn't pull your foreskin back) 2.2 dti and a 3.0 v6 which is supposed to be a nice drive. Hope this helps.

The 1.9's (fiat unit as fitted in saab, fiat, alfa and vauxhall) are far more reliable than the 2ltr dti/di engines (it wasnt hard really), the di/dti engines suffered issues with fuel pumps, not seen a fuel pump issue on the 1.9 though water pumps can be, you just need to change those with the cam belt

DPF, can be an issue, pretty much an issue on all modern diesels tbh, my 1.9 16v cdti doesnt have one so im fortunate, but the biggest issue with a diesel is how its run, ie if you do 5 miles a day then you are asking for trouble, diesels love to do miles and be hot, they are not a shopping car, especially modern ones with high pressure pumps.
Also no real issues with injectors on the 1.9 cdti, you can get problems with the dmf, but again its the same on any modern diesel that has them, they all suffer that issue

Cannot say much about the latest 2ltr cdti engines, not sure who makes these for Vauxhall, the 1.7 is their trusty old engine and the 1.3 is a fiat unit, gutless though so best to avoid.

The Pug/Citroen 1.6 is a good engine, not the most powerful but you can easily do 70+mpg, and the 2ltr hdi is also very good, also not the most powerful but does the job well, but I would also look at renault, avoid the vw groups 2ltr tdi, especially the 170, they are suppose to be recalling them for injectors, not cheap at £900 each (i know of a couple of people who have had injectors go on these engines, and I only know a couple of people with these engined cars )

+1 for watching the water pump. The water pump on my 1.9 150bhp Saab siezed at 63k miles. Thankfully it didn't lunch the engine and Saab paid 50% of the bill (without me even asking). I've since had it replaced again at 108k.

We run a fleet of combos 1.3 and they are best avoided. I have a 2003 1.7 93k engine has had no problems, only replaced all 4 coil springs and drop links.

What about the v6 diesels ?? Ive seen a few v6 diesel signums and am tempted. I know these engines are in the Saab 9-5s too. I read some reports saying these engines have liner issues which loosen and cause the headgasket to go. Anyone know any more about this ??

I got my vectra diesel 04 plate (150) with 90k and at around 100k I developed problem with swirl flaps and need inlet manifold togther with new EGr valve. This cost me around £700 to fix and looking online its a common problem with high mileage.

This has been the only problem i've encountered and the car now has 120k and still pulls like a train. I believe and im sure somebody will qoute me if im wrong the 120bhp model does not suffer from this issue.
