i had a new one in 2004, it was first of the facelift ones in the newer darker grey colour.
excellent car only criticism would you need to rev the nuts off it to get it to go fast and has very little torque so makes the driving hard work at times, but i loved it,excellent performance car.

Service history and regular oil changes are essential - the engine is bulletproof as long as the oil and filter are changed, this engine wiill happily clock up 200K without any work.
I have had two vtec's a 1.6 and 1.8 and they never gave any trouble. Yes they do need revving but they are designed to do this day in, day out
Induction kits - usually they are not a good thing on the VTI engines and reduce power.

having owned a dc5 integra for the last three years, i wouldnt hesitate to highly recommend the engines in these cars,k20 series, steering feedback was a class apart, they are at home on track, the ability to hold gears through the rev range,ie 2000-8000 is an experience in itself, have a look on forums, only need 'fast road setup' to get handling spot on,they will get twitchy at the rear in damp conditions, you will get to feel the limits!

I had a civic vti 3 door dohc 1.6 It was modded with exhaust and induction kit.
Loving Honda's as I do I went to test drive a 2005 Type R. My 1.6 vtec was faster and more exciting. The switch over to vtec on a Type R is around 6000rpm so you need to keep in reving high. The vti switchover was 5600rpm.
So....if you get one you must get an exhaust and an induction kit. Transforms Honda vtecs. Both for the experience (baaaaAAAARPPP) and the pace of it.
Don't get me wrong, i would not buy a 1.6vti now. They are all wrecked with crappy bodykits stuck on them. EP3 Type R is the chassis to go for, so yeh a 2002 model.
Make sure the suspension is good condition - lower control arms etc and they get through bushes like no tomorrow. High bill if need replacing.
Make sure the cambelt has been done every 50k also.

my vtec had done 105k when i sold it. Engine was like brand new - but i did oil, filter, plug changes every 5000 miles.
Clutch depends on how it has been treated. Some need replacing every 50k, others last longer.
