Default Peugeot 206cc cut out.

My mate`s daughter was driving her Pug and suddenly, a load of lights came on the dash and the car just died! Someone suggested it may be the alternator??? Would a buggered battery actually cut out like this? Any ideas?

It sounds like some sort of electrical fault - when you say the dash lights came on was it the same lights as usually illuminate when you turn the key just prior to starting or have any/all/just warning lights stayed on?

If the alternator is not charging the battery then it will go flat and cut out - if it is an old battery then it might well finish it off.

simple test to see if the battery has any life in it, put the headlights on and try to start the car if the light dim to next to nothing and you hear the starter really clicking away and the dash lights pretty much fade out then the battery is flat. If the battery is knackered and the alternator ok then as long as the car was running then the alternator should keep it running. The battery is primarily there to start the car and run the leccy bits when the engine is not running.

I would check the battery connections are tight and not corroded - if so clean and reattach properly, then move to the battery earth and chassis earth's and ensure they are clean and tight.

recharge the battery and then try it again.

Being car is French and a few years old, electrical gremlins will become par for the course!

He took a tester home from work to test the battery and it was reading 12.5v when it was off and while running it was the same until he revved it and it went up to 14.5v (which surely means the alternator is doing it`s job???) Since taking the battery off to charge it, a sequence of lights has illuminated. From memory, cat light, then self diagnostic light, airbag warning, brake warning and so on! I`ve suggested he gets a diagnostic done. Maybe the ECU needs a reset or something. As said above, I thought the same, if the alternator is ok, it should keep it running. Bloody French cars

the earth strap that is conected to the gearbox is a common fault on the 206's check that first mate. also what yr is the car as if its a mulitplex one you need to disconect and reconect the battery in the right way or you can bugger up the bsi unit .
heres a how to mate
PROCEDURE FOR BATTERY DISCONNECTION

Whenever a vehicle battery has to be disconnected, switch off all equipment, interior lights etc,
close the doors leaving the drivers window open.
Switch off the ignition and remove the key and any diagnostic equipment.
Wait a full 3 minutes before disconnecting the battery.
The BSi must be allowed to go to SLEEP i.e. into "active economy mode". Do not operate any
equipment on the vehicle during this time. Remember, even opening the bonnet
will wake the BSi on a vehicle fitted with alarm.
If the battery is under the bonnet, open the bonnet first and leave it up.
ALWAYS disconnect any DIAG equipment and do not operate any other vehicles during the 3
minute waiting period.

PROCEDURE FOR BATTERY RECONNECTION

Unless otherwise instructed by Peugeot or Product Service, you must always carry out the
following procedure, often referred to as a "soft re-boot", to minimize the
possibility of the BSi corrupting its own software when reconnecting the vehicles battery supply.
Ensure the procedure for battery disconnection has been adhered to and importantly all BSi
functions were switched off with the drivers window left down.
1 Close all doors
2 Remove ignition key if left in ignition
3 Reconnect battery. DO NOT open any doors
4 Wait 10 seconds
5 Switch on headlights through the driver’s window
6 Switch on ignition then start the vehicle and check system functions

Google it you will be shocked

young lad at work had a 51 plate and it did the same. so went on a search and is a common fault with the 206 there were plenty of threads and links where the owners chased the issue replaced multiple parts and it was never cured. The dealers washed their hands of the issue, no recalls no accpetion of blame etc and many owners driving a car that will cut out mid bend and steering lock clicks on etc just what happened to the lad at work.
