Default Last air cooled Porsche?

When did Porsche ditch the air (oil) cooled flat 6?

I saw a 90's 911 a few days ago and it sounded awesome.

Does the way they are cooled affect the sound or was it just that, that design of engine sounded good regardless of cooling?

From outside Turbos sound like a Dyson on steroids; GT cars mostly sound like a bag of nails.

Best sound in my own experience is a 996 GT3 on full chat from inside - pure sex!

I must say that purely in terms of sound Porsche don't do well at all. There are many many cars that sound way better than any Porsche from any time. I'm not saying they are better cars, just that they sound better.

Tbh, I've never really heard a Porsche that makes my spine tingle

That's the thing - as Trout says, most of the Porsche engines sound like they've got a bag of rusty nails in them.

The engines with a PSE, however, sound fantastic.
I've unplugged my PSE so it's always on and for some reason the 3.4 DFi engine sounds a lot raspier and better than the 3.6. (almost a V10 metallic rasp when accelerating)

Ding, have you not heard a CGT accelerating?

I'm not saying they sound bad by any stretch of the imagination. I've heard the GT3 engine on vids being pushed to the limit and that does sound nice for sure. But in very general terms Porsche engines don't sound great compared to what else is out there.

Unfortunately I've never heard a CGT.

Porsche Sports Exhaust.

A vastly overpriced, but IMO essential bit of stainless steel!
It's switchable, so it can be on or off (two valves close it of when the dash button is pressed).

The problem is though, even when it's switched on, it mutes itself between 30-40 ph due to German noise regs.

Unplugging the solenoid in the engine bay means its on all the time irrespective of speed

Agree with you 100%.

It's one of those engines where the noise on tickover always makes you think it's broken

My 944 doesn't sound awesome but it sounds a whole lot better than my Saab, at least it makes some noise.

Flat engines do have a nice note, as we should know, the lack of a water jacket does allow more noise out as the block is thinner as it doesn't have to have water channels, we have a RWD, rear engined, air cooled model, sadly its a Fiat 500 not a 993 !

Trouble is air cooled Pork is now very expensive, well 964's and 993's have gone silly, that only leaves the 10/15 grand 1980's models unless you want a 996, I will go for a 996 Turbo next, two grand put away so far, only another 25 to go

15k netted me a tidy 964, there are good cars out there but decent air cooled pork is appreciating.

Air Cooled pork tends to sound like a bag of nails on tickover, but on song they sound superb.

I've only driven a couple of kettle 911's they didn't sound as good IMHO but then again they were only 996 C4's

The only place to enjoy the 911 engine note is from the drivers seat.

It is so distinctive - even the prosaic models are special with that creamy smooth turbine noise, behind you!!!! Unique.

And the GT models have that amazing on cam noise, AND an extra 2k rpm to run to the red line - makes a world of difference.

My favourite is probably the 996 GT3, but the RS with the titanium PSE () sounds like a bag full of lions on heat when you hit 4,500rpm

I don't know actually, they just seem to sound more 'clattery'? I haven't clue why.

I think it mostly comes down to header and 'zaust design. Most cars come standard with one or more big mufflers plus a cat which kind of hurts the sound, but generally anything with 6 or more pots can sound great potentially, although a turbo does tend to effect things a bit.

Still it depends what you like. Some people might like the sound of a push rod V8 with side exit pipes and a wild cam. I know they sound mental just at idle.

Was walking the Dog the other week and A 911 went past at full chat the other day and I thought it sounded Awesome, normally you dont hear them being used like that, then a TVR Cerbera went past on part throttle and redefined awesome and made the 911 sound "nice", sounded like a V8 one from the noise, whilst they are working I dont think there is anything sounds better. Bentley Conti GT on full bore sounds pretty amazing as well.

My 944 doesnt sound special, its only got four cylinders, but it makes a noise which is more than the Saab did, it's progress, plus it is faster than anticipated, a new Evo X driver gave his some stick when I was behind, off a roundabout and it didnt pull away much despite the plumes of gray smoke it was leaving, are they not all that fast ? it pulled a car length or so but expected it to destroy an old N/A 944 like I was stood still.

I guess with the air cooled you have all those fins and an absence of coolant filled cavities in the block/case and head. The coolant in a water cooled engine will muffle noise and I suppose the fins kind of resonate or project the mechanical noise out quite well?

Why did Porsche stop air cooled out of interest?

Are you sure it wasn't a GTS? They look very similar, and they weight loads.

Do they have twin pipes and can you get them over here, looking at the specs of those there is no way it would have pulled any distance on me, unless I was down by a cylinder, N/A cars dont tend to blow out smoke like that either.

It could have been a Lancer Ralliart X then. They have a turbo, but are even slower than a standard WRX.

Beg to differ V10 Carrera!

I managed to stall one 6 or so times before perfecting the standing start which involves bags of revs. The clutch is like an on/off switch and it has a small flywheel which would make for interesting town driving. Luckily i was at Millbrook!

That does sound nice but as Trout says they sound awful. Ive only had first hand experience with the 996 Cerrera 2 and a 996 Carrera 4S but they both sounded like there was something had broken off and was rattling around in the engine.
