I think If I had the money, it would be a GTR on the drive.

They forgot the last round..

Looks:

GTR - 6 M5 - 0

My word the M5 looks epically bland, the wheels look Shiite too.

Well that screws that as a possible replacement then

They didn't compare refinement and comfort, living with it day in-day out.

NEILLLLL, the shocking thing is that the 0-100-0 on the GTR would only be about a second slower if they used launch control.

Good as the M5 and GTR are, they are ******* expensive these days, as is everything! I couldn't believe that a diesel focus now costs over £20k! I used to think that was a lot of money.

It was! I remember when the Turbo 2000 was just a shade over £20k and it was rocketship fast compared to everything else at the time.

I need a GTR in my life so badly. I love the feeling of acceleration and g and especially love silly settings to play with and displays to **** around in. I think me and GTR are a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, my financial means are more ropey non-running GTiR at the moment

I still think it is a lot of money, especially for a diesel focus, I really like the focus, the wife has one but 20k?
Can't believe people buy cars new at that price whatever the income

I was meant to have test driven one months ago but was too busy. Could have a drive of one next week but tbh not sure if I can be bothered.

Funnily enough I hated the standard e60 5 series but loved the M5 and now I think the standard 5 looks quite slick but hate the M5 looks. Have you seen the tacky silver effect side grills and the garish bright blue calipers? Wtf is that all about? The wheels also look rubbish

So in answer to your question, no not really

Not surprising but then again, not exactly like-for-like cars though, are they?
GTR - awd M5 not
M5 is a luxo-barge, whereas the GTR is a more focussed weapon.
M5 is a family-carrier. GTR isn't

Don't get me wrong, I like both cars, but this type of video (and let's be honest, it IS Autocar - the Daily Sport of the motoring press) is entertaining at best, comparison-wise, pointless at worst.

Still, a bit of a laugh eh?

Are they both auto now then?

I'd rather have a GTR but I like M5's too.

To be fair they are not direct competitors in my mind anyway and are a totally different experience around a track.

Straight line performances quoted are great for a OEM car but you can do the same in an old escort with enough money under the hood.

To be fair Nissan but rear seats in the GTR for what reason exactly? Is it a kind of nod to the R chassis GTR's 'cos they were built to fit touring car specifications? Is it for practicality? Being so small (the rear seats) and having only two doors it is hardly practical?

Yes the M5 is a luxo-super-barge but the GTR is not an out and out weapon 'cos the 4 seats.

The wheels also look rubbish
I love my M-cars but with the exception of the 1M (which nicked from the parts bin) there hasn't been an M-car since the e46 that had decent wheels. A real design weak point IMHO. The e60 M5 wheels were boring, the M6 not much better and the new ones are similar (same?) to the M6. None of them have the visual impact of the wheels on the e46 (in 19" form) or those of the CSL.

M5 and GT-R are not in the same league though. So why compare?

The GT-R really a 2 seater sports car designed to beat the 911 turbo.

The M5 is a luxury family saloon car that can beat most other family salooon cars, and a lot of sports cars.

No one thinking of an M5 would buy a GT-R as an everyday car.

The M5 rivals are the Audi RS6 and Merc AMG saloon cars.

The GT-R rivals are the 911 turbo, Audi R8, Ferrari 458 etc etc

I assume they did the comparison purely cos they cost similar cos they`re very different cars so a bit pointless really

Yes it is rather pointless. It appeared in a thread called 'comparing apples and oranges' on www.m5board.com.

I posted it a little tongue in cheek as the result was so predictable

I certainly cross shop over market segments. This market is not need driven for many, if the buyer likes the car they may easily change between coupe, saloon, hatch, estate. They will often have use of other cars.

Personally for style reasons I would perhaps choose something more low key than a coupe, but all other factors are not equal.

Apparently rear seats (although useless) are put in by manufacturers to make cars more insurance friendly if there is such a thing these days.
