Default Not a suburu, but what car would you have?

Hi guys.

Since selling my 03 sti last year I have been using my girlfriends vectra, so we both agreed sometime early next year it will be time for a new car.

We both agree we want something that looks good. "sporty" as she calls it, and something that is pretty nippy.

So far i have narrowed it down to Focus st, Vectra vxr and possibly the Megane r26.

Dont really know much about these cars, so was wondering does anybody have any opinions on them? or own one themselves.

Probably have about 8k ish to spend.

Thanks for any help

Get a Focus RS. ST is a nice car but you will always wished you had bought the RS

The RS's are lovely looking cars, but at 20k way out of my price range. To be honest dont think i could justify it to myself anyway spending 20k+ on a focus.

Having had my S2000 a couple of months I have become a bit of a Honda freak!

Down the road from me is a nice white 2001 Honda Integra type R, ex bugeye owner as well

I would consider one of them, I dont think i'd pay 8k for one though

Have you considered a mazda 6 mps 4wd decent power and subtle looks.

Crappy badge but the interior knocks the socks off any scoob.

I second the s2000 if you like to rev your engines, but the integras are not all they are cracked up to be. Unless they have forced induction you will be underwhelmed with the power and as with all hondas no torque but a fun drive...

Out of the three you list I'd go for the Focus ST every time
The RS is for attention seekers who have need to over-compensate for something

Every fast FWD Vauxhall ever suffers from chronic understeer, unless you spend a fortune on the decent suspension GM won't fit

Renault have come a long way in the last few years, but you'll still always be worrying about whether it'll stay together

I'd also go with Loz and say try an Octavia vRS, or a Leon Cupra Sport, you'll be pleasantly surprised

I have been looking for something different to a scooby for a while now. Back in Jan I bought a DC5 - that lasted a whole month I sold it (no torque, had to thrash it, not fast enough)

Thought about a Focus ST. Here's a PH thread. I'm tall and the seat position is very high. This combined with dire fuel consumption (worse than a scooby), plus it is a Focus, has put me off that.

Thought about a chipped diesel Fabia VRS, and all the rest of them. VCurrently have a 2.0 Zetec Foucs, and have decided to keep my classic STi Wagon (have the Type R in the garage which is of course going no-where). Here's the thread on that.

It's a toughie. I would say definitely test drive before buying as you don't want to have to re-sell afterward like I'm having to

£8k will get you an Evo 8 or a mark I Focus RS - both will hold their value quite well. The same can't be said for any Vauxhall or Renault.

Have to agree here, in short the focus st is very thirsty but a great all round prob suit the missis... Vxr big boost bye bye steering but good fun and aggressive looks. The megane is a great peice of kit BUT its french... End of.

Get another scoob or evo mate.

The mkII ST is faster than the mkI RS around the 'Ring, plus, as nice as the are, I can't stand the blue flashes of the Sparco seats and steering wheel nor the slashy swoopy dash. Of the choices I'd go with the Megane R26.

Ah yes, that's the one (of a tiny few) very good review I remember reading before buying mine. On track it is in it's element, but on the road it needs working hard, is underpowered and has no low down grunt

It does feel light, nimble and dynamic. Looks good, well engineered (watch for gearbox bearings though - quite common on the smaller Honda's), can be considered two cars in one, where you can pootle about and get decent fuel economy, and then take it out for a blast and it's a little racer

Overall though it just hasn't got the quick, availa=ble get up and go, not for me anyway
