Mate, consider a Civic Type R!!!
They are fast, well built, reliable and look aggressive - also larger than a VTS. Consider 0-60 in around 6.5 secs and 200BHP!
Plus, I've found a site that sells these beasts at 12 and a half grand for a UK spec model!!!

Shame the Civic Type R looks like the modern non-descript people carrier type of motor ( Peugeot 307, 206, Fiat Stilo etc etc ) Nice engine mind.

The MG-ZR 160 is a decent car if you can put up with the awful interior. MR Rover are giving away a years free group 16 insurance with it too to anyone over 21. That must be worth anything up to £2000 to young lads without much NCB.

The Clio 172 must be considered...can be picked up new for around the 11/12 grand mark on import.

Second hand there is always the Integra Type R or the Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo ( 220 bhp, can pick up T plates for well under 10 K ) both look a bit dated now though, you can pick up a decent scoob for that sort of cash second hand anyway.

Horses for courses I suppose

Wink

Or a Nissan 200sx, slightly modded it will show a scooby the way, plus RWD, lots of slippy slidey fun

Read early reviews of the Focus ST170 and they say it's one of the fastest point to point cars over A/B roads they've ever driven (fast because of its mid-range grunt, already good chassis and computer stability control that really works).

Cletterridge,

I second that, after having a 1.8 zetec for a little while with a lowley 115bhp, it was still one of the most chuckable FWD motors I have every driven ( and that is quite a few )..

The ST170 address all the downsides to the less powerful models, and adds to what is alredy a great little car !

I agree Rocker the CTR is too people carrier like!!

I love the looks of the MG but I'm worried about second hand value and reliabilty of it.

I like the look of the front of the Renualt but the back lets it down! But I didn't even think about that one maybe that's one to look into.

After being burnt with the saxo (looking at worse case losing £6k in it's first year) I'm after a car that wont lose money quicker than a essex girl virginity!!

Thanks ya all for ya veiws

Don't surpose any of y'all have running costs etc of the above motors??

Cheers Mike

£6K what the hell gave you that idea? I saw an X-reg MKII VTS in the bogging gold colour (black is currently most popular) at a garge with an £8995 sticker - surely my car (1 year old, black, 30,000) could be sold privately for £7,500 perhaps even £8,000. That wouldn't be anywhere near £6k loss!!

Sounds like you are in the exact same situation as me, i.e. want something much faster but limited funds

Don't waste your time with the 172 and 306 GTI-6 as they aren't any faster (172, very slightly). The CTR may be a good choice but it has suspect looks. I went through this exercise a month ago and concluded that none of the hot-hatches would be significantly quicker than the VTS and thus settled on the scooby idea. Bangs for bucks though an £8k Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo takes some beating as does some of the older jap turbo cars.

Cooper S looks interesting and will be a bit more tunable powerwise than the civic type R + the power is (it seems on paper) a lot more accessible around town.

The trouble is down this way Saxo are as common as much and the market is flooded with them!! Like I said £6K is the worst case as the most I've been offered is £6500 for it!! Local dealer has a W VTR for £8995 so I should in theory get that mine only has 8600 miles on it so its a low milage saxo. Trouble is that the second hand market is crap what would you do buy second had or fork out a little more and get a new one with a years insurance. Though I will say in my experience that buying a new saxo aint always a good idea as your bound to have some problems and you need to run the engine in for about 4-6k before it loses up nicely

Your right it all depends on what I get back on the saxo basically it's saxo + £3k so looking at the £12-13K range tops less is better!!
The 306 has a soft spot in my heart coz I love them to bits and I've never had any trouble with my Peugeot motors! 172 is nice but I'll have to have a look at it. I agree with you again about the CTR looks but the inside is the DB!

Scooby I've test driven and love to bits it's my first choice but I don't think I'm gonna end up getting one in the right colour and spec that I want.

Dont like Fiats and what sort of japs car are there!! Supra? Evo? RX-7?

Might get a dealer to give me a price for my VTS next week so I can get an idea for what they would give for it. Fair point on the insurance thing, does harm second hand values further. I don't think there are anywhere near the number of VTS up here that you guys must have down south. I'd say most dealers have a 10:1 VTR:VTS ratio on there fourcourts.

Saxo VTS, sorry 4 the late posting, the website u required for a CTR at 12 and a half grand ( UK spec ):
vehicles4u@hotmail.com or phone 0870 200 3060.
Alternatively, have a look in Evo magazine, page 170 - u will see their advert in there, worth checking out mate!

I'd go 200sx. Great fun.

Service is every 6 months or 6k but it's major minor (170/90) so not too bad. Tyres wear pretty quick too. But it's a performance car.

Just jump on the Impreza bandwagon. If it turns out you can't afford it just drive it harder and the grin will outweight the fact you can't afford a life anymore

Sounds pretty rough! I get about 15k out the fronts (mostly motorways too) and by no means treat them with kid gloves! I tend to wear the shoulders first by chucking her too fast into corners and roundabouts Tyres are a difficult one though cause if you're careful you'll get 30,000 if your not 5! I'd still be a little worried at under 10K if your not abusing them too much.

out of the st170 and CTR, i'd go for the latter defo.

test drove both as i'm after one of them followin my z-s.
spoke to my dealer and said it was either his st or a ctr and how could he sway me to an st, he said go for the ctr!!! so even ford dealers now it's hand down to ctr............plus its got alot more of a nicer interior

Question

Saxoboy,

That is what I would have thought, The tyre wear is uneven (worn more on the inside than outside?) ****roen *coughs* I mean Citroen said that it's because of incorrect pressure but I make sure that it is always rite (2.3 front & 2.0 rear).

My dad asked if it was the tracking but they reply I don't know we will not check until you replace the front tyres!! What y'all think are they pulling a fast one? Or should I be really worried about this. Taken into account that the reason that it went it was that it pull to the left under braking. Veiws please

Cheers

Tyre wear on mines is outside first - mis-treatment on corners If they are wearing on the inside first something has to be wrong, especially if pulling to one side under braking. I'd get the tracking checked.

Probably not the cause: But, make sure the wheels are well balanced, the MKII VTS has centerless wheels and they are a fu*king nightmare to get properly balanced. I was told you need some special adapter thingy!!

cheers mate,

Bloody Citroen wont touch it until I change the tyres and it could be because the tracking is out that the tyres are nackered....guess they might be saying that so they don't have to cover some of the cost

Then again maybe not

Cheers anyway
