Help me pick a run around ?
Hello !
Looking to get myself a wee run around thats capable of towing a trailer along with my scooby/trackcar
Willing to spend 2K tops, I do 110 miles a day 5 times a week for work so has to be able to cope with this fine
It has to be turbo diesel
Thats all I require really, comfort/gadgets/age of car doesnt bother me, it must handle reasonably well though
So far I'm looking at
Ford Mondeo LX TDCI
Audi A3
Audi A4
Golf GT TDI
BMW 325 TD E36 (my favourite )
Head says the Mondeos a good buy but my heart wants the BMW, plus its already got a towbar fitted and looks like I could get it cheap
Would appreciate peoples thoughts/suggestions please

The Mondeo looks best, the others have space ship miles. Although I'm not sure you could legally tow a trailer with your track car/ impreza on due to weight. Have a look here:

The way I understand it is the whole load can be upto 3.5 tonnes inc towing car
The trailer + car weight must be less than the towing car weight
Can someone correct me if I'm wrong as i dont fancy doing the B+E iirc part of my license, not for £500 anyway

I've found these will tow 1600-1800kg... V70 XC
I don't think that the ones on your list will be able to tow that weight sorry.
Tow car search will bring up all the cars that you could use, just put the weights in and search for older cars

I had a golf gt tdi between my Saab and first 320d - I have to say it was a great little motor, very fast for a diesel and very torquey! I have also driven two A4's and quite like them but no way as good as the 3 series in my experience (i'm on my second 3 series, my last one (56 plate) did 210k with me from new in 3.5 years and was still on the same gearbox and clutch - absolute dream and total work horse!).

When people are saying its not legal to tow such weights with some of these cars, is that without sitting a test or just in general ?
Glad I asked as I could have made a very stupid mistake
I was under the impression that aslong as i'm not over 3.5 tonne and the towing cars heavier than the load then no test is needed ?
Thanks

Seat Leon TDI.
Cheaper than the Golf and A3 yet exactly the same vehicle. We've had a 2000 Seat Leon for 4 years and it's been awesome. No issues at all.

Large goods vehicle and passenger carrying vehicle licences held before 1 January 1997
Since 1 January 1997 all drivers who hold category C or D entitlement have been limited to trailers up to 750kgs MAM; Category C+E or D+E must be held in order to tow trailers in excess of this.
Car driving licence first obtained since 1 January 1997
Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles. In addition to the new driving tests, drivers of vehicles which fall within subcategories C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E also have to meet higher medical standards.

Category B+E allows vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM to be combined with trailers in excess of 750kgs MAM. In order to gain this entitlement new category B licence holders have to pass a further practical test for category B+E. There is no category B+E theory test. For driver licensing purposes there are no vehicle/trailer weight ratio limits for category B+E.

They were top guys running it, great instructors. Too far for you to go no doubt (Bathgate). There will be good places near you.
I even did a wee write up at the time on passionford, cos someone was asking about it on there. Here's the link if it's any help (my username on there is Alan_D) - http://passionford.com/forum/general...ilor-test.html

Think I would be favouring an E46 330D manual touring - decent fuel economy, decent amount of torque and shed loads of room in the back. It is also rear wheel drive which is more stable and will offer better traction when towing. Don't forget all towbars are not created equal - make sure you are fitting a class 3 towing hitch.

maximum weight a mondeo tdci can tow is 1715 kgs, the recommended weight so as not to damage the cutch and drive train is 1279 kgs.
ive got a forester TTB with lpg that I may be selling, was hoping for more than £2k though, was going to advertise it at £2500, lpg kit was nearly £2000. 70p a litre

In this situation if you have not cot B+E on your Licence the only way you can tow the trailer is;
The Maximum weight of the trailer and Load is less than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle
and
The combination weighs no more than 3500kg.
So to tow your track car you will most likely need to do the +E towing test.
