Hi,

I'm looking for a 4x4 and the above options are on the table. I am a tree surgeon by trade and up to last week ran a defender 130 tipper (work) and Merc ML430 (personal). I was however made an offer I could not refuse for the landy so it has gone to make way for a transit and a bag full of cash.

I am therefore selling my Merc ML430 and will have approx £11-12k to spend on a vehicle that will be

- used to ferry the kids to nursery most days
- used for family trips to the lakes with the dogs in the back visiting the inlaws
- used for quoting for work (lots of short journeys)
- used to tow for log deliveries (couple of tonnes at a time) and will very occasionally take people and kit into the woods for work
- used as a shooting bus both locally up and down farm tracks and doing distance into Scotland and the lakes. It needs to perform off road and in the snow

Wife currently has an A4 estate but doesn't like taking the dog anywhere so mine tends to end up as the family bus. She now wants a toy so mine will be the main family bus for definate.

The Merc isn't 4x4 enough to do all the above so I need something a bit 'better'.

The defender is the ultimate off road but for my money I would be looking at somewhere around a yr 2000 and they are not the best thing on road. It would however hold it's money

The disco 3 would be much better on road but is it man enough for the off road/work stuff? Could just get a 2005ish for the money

The navara would be a compromise, not as good off road as the defender, not as good on road as the disco but I could get 2007 ish. It's value would drop quick though. I had a 2002 Navara before the Landy and it did well.

Have i missed anything else off the list other than the other 4x4 pickups.

Lwb Shogun Nissan Patrol, Toyota Landcruiser, Hyundai Terracan ?
Pickups definately get more for your money, lots of choice, L200, Isuzu Rodeo, Ford Ranger.

I would probably go for a shogun and live with the so called pikey image

Do Defenders really hold their money that well?

The 130 I had was sold for just under £13k and it was a year 2000. A brand new one to the same spec would be £25-28k.

How many other cars are worth half their intial value at 11 years old having worked hard?

A LWB Shogun is similar to the disco in my opinion. Will it do the off roading I ask it to?

Forget the L200's.

I'd go with the Toyota pick up or Nissan Patrol.
